A. [character history/background]:In early 1833, Joel Goldschmidt, a natural biologist, and his assistant, Amshel Goldsmith, discovered a mummified, vaguely female-ish creature frozen in a glacier in Iceland. They named it "Saya", and Joel had it shipped to his French estate, called "The Zoo", where he conducted his research. It arrived on April 8th. Joel and Amshel proceeded to dissect the mummy, and extracted from its womb two cocoons. When they tried to dissect these as well, Amshel cut himself, and the blood he dripped onto the cocoons caused a reaction: they grew warmer, and began to pulsate. Because of the mummy's physiology resembled a bat in some ways, they christened the species chiroptera.
On August 4th, the cocoons hatched and twin girls emerged. As part of an experiment, Joel adopted the first and raised her as his own daughter, naming her Saya after her mother; the second was locked, unnamed, in a tower, and given only the barest essentials for survival. The only contact the nameless twin had was Amshel, who delivered her meals, and Joel, who performed experiments on her. At all times she was chained to the wall, windows barred, with a cage separating her from the locked door. She slept on the floor in a shift, with one meager scrap of a blanket for warmth.
By 1863, both twins had stopped aging completely. Through observation of Saya and experimentation with her blood and the other's, Joel slowly began to uncover the secrets of this new species. The second twin, meanwhile, had begun to sing, and one day Saya heard her and set out to find the voice. When Saya found the tower, she called up to its occupant and asked for her name. The girl responded that she didn't have a name. "Then I'll give you a name!" Saya decided. "I'll call you Diva. It means 'great songstress'. Will you be my friend?" In response, Diva dropped a single blue rose from the tower window.
1883 changed everything. With Joel's birthday approaching, Saya came to Diva and asked if she would sing at Joel's party. Saya promised that she would release Diva, who had never been outside of the tower, but after she unlocked the door, she left. Diva freed herself from the rest of her restrains, slipped out of the cage, and opened the door of her prison.
When Saya returned to the party, everything was in flames. Diva, who had spent the last fifty years imprisoned, experimented on, and treated like an animal, had gone on a rampage, feeding off of everyone at the party--although she saved Joel for last. Amshel, her keeper, she spared, and the two fled. Diva made Amshel her chevalier--a chiroptera created by feeding the blood of a queen to a human, absolutely loyal to his or her creator.
However, queens only have two to three years of activity before they fall into thirty-year hibernation cycles, and soon Diva fell into hers. She awoke in the late 1910s, and on the eve of her awakening Amshel brought a young medical doctor to her named Solomon Goldsmith. After taking Amshel's blood, Diva took Solomon's, and then made him her chevalier. They traveled to Russia and enlisted the aid of Grigori Rasputin in Amshel's continuing chiropteran research. Diva made Rasputin her chevalier as well, then killed and disguised herself as the Romanov princess Anastasia.
By this time, Saya and her chevalier Hagi had tracked Diva to Russia, intent on killing her. When the Russian Revolution erupted in 1917, Diva and her chevaliers fled St. Petersburg. Hagi and Saya gave pursuit and followed them to Rasputin's hometown of Pokrovskoye, knowing--or strongly suspecting--that Anastasia was Diva. Rasputin was killed while Diva fled.
Again she fell into her hibernation, awoke thirty years later, and after a few years fell back asleep. In 1972, twenty years into her next cycle, something caused Diva to awaken early. In Vietnam, she was presented with a man named Karl Fei-Ong who wished to become her chevalier, and so Diva fed him her blood. By this point, Amshel, Solomon, and their "pharmaceutical company" Cinq Fléches were working in conjunction with the U.S. military to artificially create chiroptera, and numbers of these beasts were released in Vietnam. In response, Red Shield--an organization founded by the grandsons of Joel Goldsmith with the express purpose of killing Diva--decided to force Saya awake. However, the forced awakening combined with Diva's song, sent Saya into a berserk rage, after which she fell back asleep. With two new chevaliers, James and Nathan, added to her ranks, Diva's next hibernation period soon followed.
When Diva awoke again, it was 2006. She was moved from Vietnam to Cinq Fléches's French headquarters in Paris. After receiving the blood of awakening from Amshel, Diva made him take her to the Zoo to see her elder sister Saya--Amshel had lured her there. Waiting in the tower, Diva began to sing, and her voice lured Saya's adoptive younger brother Riku to her. Mistaking Diva for Saya, Riku ran to her, but Diva caught him and drained his blood. When Saya discovered them, she attacked Diva, but Diva once more escaped. Saya was forced to make Riku her chevalier, or let him die.
Afterwards, Diva developed an obsession with Riku. Finally she made Karl bring her to Red Shield's cruise liner headquarters. The two of them stormed the ship, killing everyone they came across, and Diva cornered Riku and Saya's older brother Kai in the cargo hold. Knocking Kai aside, Diva dropped her clothes, advanced on Riku, raped him, then fed him some of her blood--lethal to a chevalier created by Saya. Like all other chiroptera killed this way, Riku's body crystalized and shattered. Diva and Karl once more eluded Saya, who became murderous and bent on one thing: Diva's absolutely destruction.
Diva became pregnant--with Riku's children. The babies stayed in gestation for over a year, although their growth did not change Diva's body. Rather, Diva took on Riku's appearance. She and her chevaliers moved to America in preparation for Diva's debut concert at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her performance would be broadcast live all over the world--so that her singing could trigger a change in thousands, millions of people worldwide, infesting the world with chiroptera.
But one by one, Diva began to lose chevaliers: Karl and James were killed by Saya, and Solomon left Diva's side to join Saya, then died protecting her. Amshel performed a cesarian section on Diva and removed twin cocoons from her womb. Preparations were made to ensure Diva would make it on-stage for the concert; they know Saya would try to kill her before she could sing. On the night of the concert, with Amshel backstage holding off Saya and Hagi and Nathan in the audience with the cocoons, Diva sang her debut.
Humans in the Opera House began transforming into chiroptera, and Saya could no longer afford to wait. With Hagi distracting Amshel, Saya rushed onstage to confront her sister. Diva produced a sword of her own, both sisters coated their weapons in their own blood, and attacked. After a vicious fight, they made their final charge, swords raised in thrust positions--and ran each other through.
However, as Diva slowly began to crystalize, Saya was unharmed; Diva's blood had lost its potency when she became pregnant. Hysterical, Saya tried to hold her sister's cracking body together, crying for Diva to take Saya with her. Nathan carried the cocoons on stage and laid them near there mother, and, with a smile, Diva reached out to them. The last thing she saw as she died was a vision in her mind of herself, holding her two beautiful babies.
While Diva may be dead, however, her memory lived on in her children and her sister. Saya's brother Kai took in the twins, vowing to raise them as his own daughters in a home full of love and affection, breaking the cycle of hatred and bloodshed.
B. [character abilities]: As a chiropteran queen, Diva is faster, stronger, and tougher than other chiroptera. Because she feeds impulsively and without compunction, her abilities also tend to be greater than Saya's, who is a little less keen on blood-sucking. Diva also lives up to her name and has a beautiful singing voice which seems to have almost hypnotic qualities at times. When a human who has ingested or been injected with Delta-67 hears Diva's song, they will turn into a chiroptera, without fail. Diva's blood, when ingested by a human, will turn them into a chiroptera and make them her chevalier.
C. [character personality]: What makes Diva so sinister is that everything she does, everything she says, is wrapped in a childlike demeanor. She giggles as she kills, rips the heads off of dolls in a tantrum, and wreaks havoc with a smile. Please and thank you have very little meaning or use to Diva--what she wants, she takes, or her chevaliers give her on demand.
Because Diva was treated like a non-human, she acts like a non-human. Her only influence growing up were two scientists--one who only saw her as a specimen, and another who was obsessed with her beyond reason. Amshel never cared to teach Diva morals, and so she doesn't have them. The world exists as Diva's stage: it's her dollhouse, and the humans who live in it are her food or toys at best, and cockroaches at worst.
To Diva, Saya is a conundrum: while on one hand Diva wants to live together with her older sister, she resents Saya for the life and freedom she was given by a man Diva hates. So, even more than Diva wants to be with her sister...she wants to make her life a miserable hell, and kill her.
However, there is one thing Diva wants more than anything: to be loved. Fear she has in plenty from humans; adoration, devotion, awe--her chevaliers give her all these. But no one really, truly, as a fellow person, loves her. It's for this reason that Diva so hungrily abuses Riku the way she does; children, her own babies, will love her unconditionally.
[canon chronology]: After episode 25, when Riku becomes Saya's chevalier.
[journal post]:
Hm~ hm~ hm~ [The sound of smacking lips can he heard, then a sigh.] I didn't have to eat you, you know. But you were being so very difficult.
[A wet thump.] I don't like how you're looking at me. You should close your eyes you know. [Pause, followed by a giggle.] Oh you can't! Shall I guess? Is this what Solomon told me about? Rigor mortis~, rigor mortis~
Aaah~, but you know, I'm unhappy now. You stained my dress. I do like red, but white dresses are white and that's that. Nathan would scold me if he saw me like this.

The French countryside flashed by the tinted windows of the limo, but beautiful landscapes held little appeal to Diva. They could be interesting enough, certainly, but it was so boring just looking out at the land. Nothing happened. Redundant, repetitive, monotonous--those were all big, fancy words Amshel or Solomon would use. "Boring" suited Diva just fine.
She leaned against the door's armrest, her chin resting in her palm. The taste of that boy's blood was still in her mouth, saturating her senses. The warm, coppery scent was burned into her nostrils, and it made her mouth water. She wouldn't mind big words for a thing like that.
Solomon sat beside her, white suit contrasting against the black leather of the seat. "Hey, Solomon," Diva said without turning to look at him. "What are some other words for 'tasty'?"
"Tasty?" Diva could almost hear the thoughtful frown in his voice. "Delicious. Palatable. Savory. Luscious. Ambrosial. Why do you ask?"
Diva ignored his question. "Ambrosial... Is that like that pretty brownish gem?"
Solomon chuckled. "No," he answered. "That's amber. Ambrosia is the nectar of the gods. It keeps them immortal."
Diva lapsed into a moment of thoughtful silence. Nectar of the gods, hm? "That boy was ambrosial," she decided. "Tasty" just wasn't good enough.
"As you say," Solomon consented. Diva's ignored him, her thoughts still dwelling on the boy. He had heard her singing, had come to her tower, opening the door almost like some sort of prince. But then he had called her his--her--their sister's name, spoiling a perfectly good moment. How very naughty of him.
What would sister Saya do? She was so prone to being emotional. It was annoying, but it made things fun. Maybe--Diva's heart jumped a giddy beat, the thought formed before it was completed--maybe, maybe, just maybe, Saya would give that boy her blood. He'd be so cold by now, and Sister had been oh so very angry; she hadn't even screamed that loud when Joel died (or had she screamed at all that time? Diva couldn't remember).
Her own chevaliers hadn't worked; the Sif hadn't worked; human men were useless, too. Amshel had their eyes on Hagi--although he didn't really appeal to Diva--but if sister Saya gave that boy her blood... Why, what a happy outcome!
Diva giggled, leaned her head on Solomon's shoulder, and began to hum a little tune.
