Most of my hobbies are things that are meant to be done alone. Like birding, or reading, or working out. I guess I do those things with other people sometimes, but not as often as I do them by myself. Except for working out, my hobbies are also pretty sedentary, which isn't ideal for me ( Read more... )

I personally love making herbal soaps and candles. It's a great deal of fun, and the product makes a lovely gift for friends and family. I don't know if you have supplies for such things at the prison, but if not, perhaps I can do something about it.

When I was a boy, I loved thunderstorms, but I can understand why other children would be scared of them.

Some people do say that talking about the weather is dull, but weather is different every day, so I think it can be a lively topic. It's all in how you talk about it, and I think you had some interesting things to say.

I bet people really like getting the things you make as gifts. I've never done anything like that, but it sounds interesting - maybe I could ask around about permission.

You're right, the weather changes all the time, in a way that's kind of constant. Noticing patterns and rhythms in nature makes me feel grounded.

Thanks for your comment, Mr. Palaeno. I hope everything is going well for you.

Sadly, I haven't had much time lately to make gifts for people, but I used to work on such crafts all the time with my mother. It is pleasant to make useful things. It makes one feel useful.

Weather is one of those topics that seems simple at first, but can be quite complicated. It's good to stay connected with nature, I think!

You're very welcome, Mr. Ken. I've been doing well, thank you. I hope the same is true of you.

Looks like it's starting to get Cali-hot again! I think, like, it was 106 yesterday or the day before...but you're right on the money, the weather's, like, sucked the life out of everybody around my block. Been pretty quiet lately!

My sister and I used to have a cat that was scared of storms. Or the thunder, at least!

Yeah, the heat shouldn't be a surprise, but every year it manages to feel like one anyway. It has been pretty quiet. Maybe we could all get together for a game or something. It doesn't feel so bad outside when you're doing something fun.

I never had a pet until we joined the circus, and then the animals I knew were more like friends. Did you have more than one pet?
I know what you mean, though - even the big animals could get shaken up during a bad storm, it got to them.

That's true! I'll ask Jacques later if he's up to anything. Like, he shouldn't be doing much besides working out.

Does dog-sitting count? We did that for my aunt a few times. Um, I think she had, like, some kind of lab/collie mix we used to watch sometimes named Melanie. My aunt named her after that Melanie Rinds actress. She was in this one super cheesy romance movie--I think it's called Strawberry Saleswoman. My aunt had a Maltese too, but her barking always drove my mom nuts, so like, we didn't watch her quite as much.

You know I like reading and writing, but other than that--I did always enjoy cooking, but that's not exactly something one can do in here, and I can understand why. I used to play the saxophone, too, but that's a little difficult to carry off without a saxophone.

As for crafts--I made paper cutouts and painted pictures when I was a kid, but it's been a while. Though I am always willing to try something new.

I try to believe that there's a good side to everything, even thunderstorms. We do need the rain.

Yeah, you're the resident philosopher poet, after all. I bet you're a good cook, too.
Maybe you could ask a friend to bring you your saxophone? I'd like to hear you play sometime.

I got a couple books on crafts form the library - what do you think of something like leather tooling? Painting sounds good, but I know from experience that I can't draw for anything.

Do you ever hope it will rain when you're in the yard? I do. I wish it would really open up while I'm outside. Sounds weird, I know, but I'd love to feel that.
