Lost finale reaction - just a few thoughts

May 24, 2010 22:03

A great many of you have already spoken about the finale so much better than I am capable of doing but I'm feeling compelled to say a few things.

zelda_zee used the word generous when she was being thankful for Vincent in the Lost finale. I honestly think that generous is the best term to use overall in describing what Darlton gave us last night. I've spent so long being terrified fretting that they'd answer too much, that they wouldn't be able to resist doing something that would (smugly) point out how wrong we've all been for six seasons, that I would find the finale hateful - that I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

Immediately afterwards, there were comments everywhere about it being "perfect." Not how I felt last night, but the farther away I get from 11:30 pm on May 23 and the more the ending settles into my brain, the better I like it. Give me a week and let me watch it another time or two and I may be saying perfect as well.

I think Darlton tried to give us what we wanted, and that's why generous is very much the right word. I don't think of myself as a particularly shippy person - I enjoy many pairings, both canon and not - and the freaking triangle made me want to claw my eyes out at times. Yet I loved that we got Jack/Juliet (implied, off-camera, yes - so what?), and I also loved that we got Jack/Kate (those of you who know me well know I do not like Kate, and that I've spent quite a long time thinking Jack was an ass, but I still cried). We got Sawyer/Juliet (and I sobbed), but for the SKate shippers, the door was left wide open for Sawyer/Kate, post-island/pre-church.

They gave us many, many warm fuzzies, truly feel-good stuff. They gave us lots of reasons to shed happy tears, some of them rather obvious (the "awakenings"), but others delightful surprises (Vincent! Frank!! Richard!!!).

So, thank you, Darlton. I've railed and cursed at you over the years and wanted to throttle you any number of times, but tonight I have nothing but warm feelings for you both.

Thank you for six seasons of the best show I've ever loved. Thank you for all beautiful moments last night, the shippy and sappy, the humorous and the confusing. Thank you for making "live together, die alone" so real. Thank you for an ending that takes more than a moment of thought to understand. Thank you for leaving mysteries unanswered.

And perhaps most of all, thank you for leaving room for fandom.
