I wonder if the propensity of networks to cancel potentially long-running, coherently plotted series during the first season is inhibiting people from starting to watch them, thereby exacerbating the problem.

Absolutely. No one wants to get invested in something that's just going to leave them hanging.

Sometimes, I think the execs pull the plug on things just because they can.
