I would much rather the life sentence, actually.. and I agree that it could well make a martyr of him. Tyrant or no, he was all that held Iraq together as a country, and he did a much, much better job than the US will ever be able to do at it. At least he understood the country. After this, Iraq will be picked apart by insurgants, losing many more lives to them than if Saddam had stayed in all likelihood, and for what? Some oil? Daddy's war? Because we don't get it?
Agree that now we need to stay. The problem is really that we never needed to go. We should be in Darfur helping with the crisis (yes, crisis) there, not fucking around where we don't belong. Now we're locked in Iraq for years to come able to hope for no better than an unsteady standoff when we could really have been doing some good in the world.
The US Government helped Saddam get there, they should be taking responsibility for him with a life sentence.
