"Arguing for Independence"

Having read a sceptical book on Independence, it seemed only fair to try one that argues the case for change.  Arguing For Independence was written by the vice-chair of the SNP, Stephen Maxwell.  He sets out six cases for independence: Democratic, Economic, Social, International, Cultural and Environmental.  These are preceded by a good chapter on ( Read more... )

Some of the democratic points apply to the rest of the UK too, and having Scotland's MPs disappear from Westminster makes change less likely to happen for the rest of us.

Not having any nuclear base is one reason why NATO policy in the event of the Warsaw Pact invading and heading for Denmark was more or less 'let them have it'. You couldn't defend it properly anyway, it would avoid some massive civilian casualties, and it ties up some Soviet divisions that would otherwise be heading for the Rhine.
