Let's take a break from the usual here...I have been thinking about something recently. I always joke around and say that I hate talking on the phone, but it's really not even a joke. I insisted my mom get Caller ID for us years and years ago, so I would know who was calling at all times, and would never have to pick up if it wasn't for me. Yeah, ( Read more... )

I totally have the same problem.
It's SO weird. and I hate it. It takes me forever to be comfortable talking to people on the phone. Even with Angel, it took me forever to be able to comfortably talk to her.
I made my mom get caller ID, too, and I never answer the phone. If its for me, and I know the person is calling for a very specific reason, then *maybe* I'll get myself to answer, but most of the time I let it ring.
But then of course other times I can sit on the phone for hours, depending on who I'm talking to. And as long as there's no silence, I'm okay. lol.
I'm not taking pills. or well..I am, but when I was off them it didn't get better, or worse, and its not better now that I'm taking them again.
So I don't know. I guess we're just weird? lol.

I too have never liked talking on the phone that much. Personally, Caller ID helped me out a lot. My advice would be to talk on the phone with people you are most comfortable with to make things a little easier, and then gradually move up to people you are less comfortable with. It might help out your confidence level, and with a problem like this, a little confidence goes a long way. With your situation, I think it might help if you have a general idea of what you are going to talk about. Should you have thoughts that make you scared, I suggest you write them down and when you are no longer in that situation, you should think of ways to prove those thoughts as being untrue. A change in thought could help you out when you are on the phone. Usually, problems like this are a result of an imbalance of serotonin levels in your brain. I'll just leave it at that.

so if it IS junk wrong in the brain, should I take pills for it? You're the psych major, lol.

It really depends. Pills didn't really help me out with my problem. So the answer is, I don't know.

Honestly? I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to spend pointless time on the phone. If you don't have anything to say, you won't have anything even WITH meds. Just with meds you don't care. If you don;t like talking on the phone then don't. (I hate people being given meds because they "aren't normal")

Yeah I'd really like to get over this without going back on drugs. They make me feel like a different person altogether, and not in a good way.
