I have not updated this poor thing in forever. Part of that is because of Senior Paper, so that'll take up the bulk of this entry.

For those that don't know, I'm writing my senior thesis on Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (and for anyone whose reaction was to cringe and wonder if I'm a nutter, well, I am, but try to realize that the way ( Read more... )

I, for one, think it's awesome that you're writing on The Scarlet Letter. I'm actually thinking about writing my Junior paper on that. It sounds like a lot of fun and I actually enjoyed it when I read it in high school. But yeah, people who read that book and actually like it are definitely in the minority.

Also, I recently came to the conclusion that if I was going out of St. John's with a stable relationship, I would probably go wherever the girl wanted to go because I would value the relationship more than being able to live wherever the fuck I wanted. Not that I WILL end up dating any Johnnies, in all likelihood, but I'd probably do the same thing in your position.

Yeah, it's really sad. I remember when I read it in high school the teacher, wonderful woman though she was, tried to make it a book about dealing with living in a Puritan society, and I've come to the conclusion that the book is amazing because it's relevant to any society. Also, doing those kinds of assignments leaves you no time to sit back and enjoy the writing.

Also, thanks; sometimes I feel like people judge me really harshly because my decision is based kind of a lot on my relationship. But I swore to myself that I would never do long distance again, and breaking up is just not an option for this one, so yeah. Fe it is!

Thanks! You too; I have been keeping up on your journal and you have a bunch of really wonderful stuff on your plate at the moment also!

Wow, thanks! If you feel like 30 pages of Scarlet Letter analysis won't drive you batty, I'd be happy to email it to you tomorrow :)

Aww, Hawthorne is love. I wrote a short paper on The Minister's Black Veil for a class I had last month, which my teacher adored. His writing is a fascinating response to the religious writings of his predecessors. I sometimes think that much of it is a kind of attempt to cleans himself of his families involvement in the witch trials. I'd love to read your paper if you have the time to send it along. Yay for you doing so well!
