i feel a little sad today. i'm at home in houston for the holidays. there has been a big shake-up here in recent days, although i feel like i am alone in considering the events a "shake-up." i don't know if anyone else could reasonably consider my story upsetting, but the solitude and the slow pace of holidays at home is affording me the luxury of ( Read more... )

I've had a similar experience with a baby squirrel! My roommates (both guys) and I went out on the front porch to play guitar when a blind baby squirrel crawled over to the screen and squealed. Now, I won't claim to have superior knowledge of squirrel thought processes, but I do believe it thought the guitar to be its mother. It desperately tried to climb through the screen and onto the porch. I told the boys that we had to save it, which entailed my telling them what to do. To be honest, I'm a little scarred of saving squirrels, 'cause I'm afraid they'll die on me, have a heart attack or something (it's happened before, being from Florida, hurricanes will knock them out of nests all the time). So when the boys gave the "it's nature, deal with it" line, I had to run inside and try to forget about the poor thing.

Next morning as I walked to school, I saw dead baby squirrel squished in the road! God, I felt awful.

This is all just to follow the cliche saying that you are not alone.

Ack! These stories are just so sad! I worked for a wildlife rehabilitation centre this summer and some of the horror stories are too much to take - like people using rabbits for bow and arrow target practice.

I totally understand why you would both be sad about these baby squirrels.

bunnies? that is horrid.

i really want to volunteer with some kind of animal charity. this particular wildlife rehab is offering baby bird feeding classes for the springtime, and i wish i could enroll.

that would haunt me too! how awful for you.

but what can we do?

if a blind puppy came up on your doorstep, those boys wouldn't have disregarded it. it is so strange how our society privileges certain animals over others.

though i suppose we do that with human beings too?
