On Dec. 5th an APD cop and an animal control guy came to our door because one of the neighbors complained about one of our cats being out (whom they then took into custody ( Read more... )

Wow. I wish I had some advice for you. This is ridiculous... they are more lenient on drunk drivers than they are on pet owners. Sorry you are going through this. :(

You aren't kidding. They kept calling up people in court on Monday: DUI, DUI, assault, aggravated DUI... then me, with my cats. I'm sure the other criminals looked at each other like, "What's this guy doing here?"

One of the DUI guys was facing up to 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine, as I recall. I'm facing OVER A YEAR of potential jail time and $2500. WTF is up with that?

Thanks, I'll take a look. (I'll still need to figure out how to contain them.)

While I have no direct advice, I would note that they've been putting up billboards and stuff about this law for several months ... enough that even I've noticed, and I loathe advertising and don't have pets.

I don't doubt you, but I've not seen such a billboard myself, nor have I seen or heard any other advertising on the subject. Furthermore, several long-time Albuquerque residents to whom I mentioned this issue had no idea whatsoever that cats were to be contained.

So maybe they're trying to advertise this law (which was written in 1994, apparently?), but they haven't succeeded, IMHO.

Er, I should clarify, that what I've seen has been all about spay/neuter/chip, and not about containment. I agree that it seems insane to try to contain cats that go outdoors.

That said, I've never understood how folks think they can afford a cat or dog but not to spay/neuter it. [shrug] I'm sometimes known to be excessively practical.

I am inclined to agree. It's been my long-time plan to get the two not-yet-fixed females spayed, but we've had some severe financial issues in the last 6 months that have derailed those plans.

That said, I expect to have them all fixed & chipped before the trial on March 12th.

The microchip law irritates me.

Having been in RVT school and having been working at the pound for the last 6th months I have learned they are completely useless.

Microchips often come out *and* most of the time they aren't properly scanned for.

I am really sorry you are going through this. I had a run in with having a criminal case a long time ago and it was frightening to think that I could spend a year in jail.
