THEY REALLY NEED TO. it kind of amazes me that it hasn't already happened because jesus take a bunch of neurotic people and set them to work in the abstract plane THE RESULTS WOULD BE HILARIOUS and I cannot decide if the reason it has yet to occur is a) people are afraid to play into the ~socially awkward stereotype or b) mathematics just squicks people out generally
IDK ALL I NEED IS A (GOOD) TV SHOW SET IN A MATHS DEPARTMENT WITH SEMI-REALISTIC CHARACTERS PLS DON'T WORRY ABOUT PLAYING INTO STEREOTYPES (they're all true they all exist but just aren't representative) I JUST WANT SOMETHING THAT PRESENTS SCIENCE IN A BETTER, SEXIER, WAY THAN TBBT DOES
Math culture and its ridiculous vocabulary and terrible, terrible jokes and neurotic earnestness are all just really hilarious and endearing to me. I mean, it'd have to be, or I'd go crazy being a math student, but it's kind of exactly what people think it is, but only on the most superficial level, and most people never get to see past that level. It would be so much fun to have a show about how wonderful and at the same time horrible math is, and all the ways it turns you into a crazy person. Just like any other job, really. :P
The Big Bang Theory is a cute show, and it is relateable in some ways, but it is extremely exaggerated. It would be nice to have a show that took things just a little more...straightforwardly?
Have you seen the movie Proof? With Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal? That's not a comedy, obvs, but it's a really lovely math movie. And I am a big fan of the Mathematical Fiction Homepage, which is a database that will help you find pretty much any math story/novel/movie that exists.
YES BASICALLY. like, I groan at ~maths jokes~ and the whole science university culture in general (but that's mostly cause if the misogynistic nature of 'comedy' I'm exposed to here than anything else) but yes! I know exactly what you mean, I find it really fascinating the way the whole environment of mathematics changes a person - take a perfectly well-adjusted human being and place then in abstract phenomena from 9-5 and shit's gonna go down, and the moment you place an already slightly dysfunctional human in that environment..bang!
idk personally I find TBBT (especially in the most recent series) to be really rather reductionist, It might be different were I a physicist or engineer but as an ~abstract scientist~ I just don't find it funny anymore.
I HAVE SEEN PROOF OMG THAT FILM. I was talking about it to my PT not that long ago and he was saying how scarily accurate it was to a small sub-set of PhD's and Post-Doc's. BUT YES EVEN IF I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THE DRUG-RELATED STORYLINE IT'S STILL A++ GOOD. ahh I've sort of heard of
( ... )
I'd watch this! Something that was a bit more honest about academic and a bit less ridiculous than TBBT. Academia is a strange, strange beast. One that really would be fascinatig.
(then again I say a lot of this second hand. since my exposure was in the technology of online classrooms and through growing up with family in academia.)
yes! I'd really love to see a television show based in academia that isn't as...problematic as TBBT. idk, I just don't feel like that show helps the public perception of academics at all, and (with the possible exceptions of leonard and, to a lesser extent, lesley) it just plays into all the old stereotypes - oh look, the pretty girls bad at science! and this physicist always has to sit in the same chair! and lmao this one thinks he's a ladies man oh my. urgh maybe I'm just bitter because it's portraying the people I socialise with, and perhaps politicians feel the same way about Veep or TTOI, but ehhhh that show just had so much potential and just dropped the ball in favour of easy laughs at the expense of the characters. the early series were endearing enough, I suppose, but it could have done with being cancelled forever ago, tbh.
hahah omg i didn't mean for this to turn out as a rant about TBBT so I'm just gonna say thank you and bow out gracefully
