fabulous. I love this idea, that there is a connection between them established well prior to the events of the books. I especially liked his last line to her, 'did you?' His mild interest is a good contrast to her abrasive deflections and the dialogue was perfect.

ahhh this is really good!! i have a not-so-secret weakness for all things president coin and this is one of the few fics i've found that does her justice. well, that, and it's one of the few fics i've found about her at all haha.

but it's a fascinating take on her and how she's built her whole life around fighting a war and defines herself through the rebellion and the leader of everyone that she's slotted into these nice neat rows and how she lets herself get so focused on the after that she forgets that the mockingjay is more than the mockingjay. battles have casualties, wars have victories - i think she started taking the victory for granted (especially after katniss) and started conflating the two - if battles led to victories, shouldn't casualties just be a part of them as well?

ahem. i may spend more time trying to pick apart coin's brainspace than is generally considered fandom-appropriate. but again, wonderful fic, looking forward to more of your stuff :)

asdfghjkl thank you so much!

coin's far and away my least favourite character subjectively, but she's so interesting, her motives and feelings and beliefs. she's such a closed book in mockingjay, cause we only see her through katniss' slightly skewed worldview, so i'm really looking forward to the film adaptation so we can actually see things more objectively. idk, i just find her really fascinating and great fun to write, as is snow actually.

Oh my god, FINALLY someone else who spends more time wondering about coin than healthy... I mean, everybody seems to hate Coin (not that I can blame them) but I actually kind of like her

You have written Snow spot-on here, the way he tries to play with everyone's mind. I almost didn't read this because the pairing seemed odd to me, but I'm glad I did because you managed to convince me.

thank you! i find characters like snow really fun to write, so this means the world to me. coin/snow is pretty much a crack pairing, but imho coin seems too obsessed with bringing down snow for him to exist purely in abstract to her, and when you couple that with the fact that she's more similar to snow than she would care to admit, i think the potential for a back-story between the pair is too fascinating to resist. so yeah, super happy that you enjoyed it!

You know what line gave me goosebumps?

‘Just remember this, Alma, we make our own worst enemies. The girl on fire, the Mockingjay. It seems Katniss Everdeen was not lying was she said she struggles to make friends.’ He smiles at her retreating frame. ‘The moment she volunteered to take her sisters place at the reaping I knew my days were numbered. The question I have is, did you?’

Snow sees Coin's death before she does (one of the things I love about Mockingjay, perversely, is that Katniss and Snow don't lie to each other.)

Also, I love the idea that Coin isn't 13--it makes it so much better. Also, self-aware!Snow is kind of awesome (because you know he is self-aware and that makes what he does that much worse.)

thank you! ♥

snow always struck me as such a smug bastard, in the books. he actively enjoys playing with people, in catching fire he realises that the best way to mess with katniss' head is to be honest with her, because it's her very nature not to trust people like him, and that makes him so much fun to write it's actually ridiculous.

as for coin, idk it just struck me that thirteen makes soldiers, not leaders. when you think of the high command aside from coin - plutarch, finnick, haymitch, etc - none of them are thirteen natives, and i see no reason why coin (and perhaps boggs, but that's another as yet unfinished fic) should be any different. and it means she can have a ~history~ with snow. she hates him personally too much for him to be a purely abstract idea to her.
