CHARACTER:
Name: Miku Hinasaki
Source: Fatal Frame 1
History: On September 24th, Mafuyu Hinasaki enters Himuro Mansion.

Nine days later, he still has not returned.

Based on a note Mafuyu wrote before he left, his younger sister Miku follows him to the mansion on October 3rd, where her life will change forever. She will spend four long, dangerous nights here, as she seeks to find her brother and unravel the mystery of this wretched place.

1st Night - The Strangling Ritual:

Almost immediately upon entering Himuro Mansion, a ghost appears--behind Miku, granted, so she does not see it. She does sense it, however. It is an eerie little girl in a white kimono, who will become incredibly vital to this story as the nights go on. Upon exploring the mansion, she finds a camera dropped in an area called the Rope Hallway--ropes dangle from the rafters, earning it its name. This is a Camera Obscura, and it has the mysterious power to exorcise ghosts. Miku will defeat ghosts for the next four nights by taking pictures of them, using various types of film.

Mafuyu initially entered to mansion to search for his mentor, a novelist named Junsei Takamine, who was accompanied by two others: his assistant, Tomoe Hirasaka, and their editor, Koji Ogata. Unfortunately, by the time Mafuyu and later Miku enter the mansion, they have died. It is through visions and tapes left behind that Miku discovers the causes of their demises.

What directly caused their deaths was something known as the Rope Curse. This curse causes ropes and rope marks to gradually appear on the victim's body. They then begin to hallucinate and end up rambling about ropes, their sanity deteriorating.

During this night Miku fights their spirits--spirits that have been tainted by a malevolent force known as the Malice, that has turned them and all of the other ghosts in the mansion hostile.

Occasionally she also sees shadows of her brother walking about the mansion--he is there in the flesh, but time has been distorted, and Mafuyu can neither see nor hear her, much to her distress.

Miku also learns of the Holy Mirror--that shattered due to a failed ritual and released the Malice. If put back together it will keep the Malice at bay, and perhaps purify the mansion. Thus, Miku decides to collect the pieces of the mirror, since maybe this can save her brother.

She eventually comes across a mirror piece in a shrine after defeating Takamine's spirit in battle. However, just as she takes it, a woman in a white kimono appears from a mirror. This woman is Kirie, the killer of Takamine, Hirasaka, and Ogata. She catches Miku and everything goes dark.

2nd Night - Demon Tag:

Miku awakens in a room of dolls, to discover two distressing things. First, there are rope marks on her wrists--the first sign of Kirie's curse. Second, the ghost of a child has stolen the mirror piece she had only just obtained.

The child is one who was spirited away by a ghost called Man With Long Arms, who searches endless for his daughter and thus kidnaps children (Miku fights him once on the first night, and again on the second night). He is one of three children who were killed by Man With Long Arms whilst playing Demon Tag--a game that is a mix of simple tag and hide and seek. One player is the 'demon' who searches for the other people hiding. This game was also a ritual in the mansion, where the first and last players captured by the former Blinded Maiden would become the subjects of the next Blinding Ritual and Strangling Ritual, respectively.

Miku comes across the latest Blinded Maiden, who appears many times on this night, crying out in agony that "it's so dark" and "there's no-one here". Visions show Miku of the Blinding Ritual, in which a mask with stakes through the eyes are forced onto the maiden's face. In this vision a man wearing a horned mask is seen, along with four priests who turn to seemingly look at Miku, as though they know she's there.

Back again to the children who were spirited away, Miku fights all three, save for the girl who acted as the 'demon'. This girl, Mikoto, is Miku's grandmother, and came across the camera Miku uses during her time in the mansion.

Miku sees further glimpses of the boy that stole the mirror piece, but finally manages to have it returned after doing battle with him.

Two other important ghosts on this night are Yae Munkata and Ryozo Munakata, who came to this mansion to live at one point in time. Miku learns their sad story and fights their spirits--Yae, who hung herself, and Ryozo, who was killed by Kirie.

Eventually she reaches an area called the Demon Mouth, where she fights Ryozo and Blinded for the final time--this night is almost over now. She has retrieved the Blinding Mask, and must use it to open a large door in the Demon Mouth to further progress on her search for Mafuyu.

Upon opening this door, she enters the Banned Path, where Ryozo's body lies--as well as a mirror piece that he was holding on to while he died. Upon taking this piece, Kirie appears again, and chases Miku. Miku tries to flee, but is stopped by terrible visions of hundreds of lurching people. Kirie reaches her, and all goes dark once more.

3rd Night - Calamity:

Miku awakens back in the Demon Mouth, and now there are ropes appearing on her ankles, too. One more touch from Kirie and she will die, just like so many before her. With her is the mirror piece she had found on the second night. Picking it up, she continues her quest to find her beloved brother.

She eventually encounters the man with the horned mask: Lord Himuro, the family master. Before fighting him she sees a vision of him attacking one of his priests with a katana--a katana that he bears even in spirit form. She defeats Lord Himuro, a man who went insane due to the Malice and slaughtered everyone in the mansion, and then later committed suicide out of regret. Before the Malice tainted him, however, it was clear he was already a cruel man. He wore the Mask of Reflection, a mask that would change form into either an angel or demon depending on who wore it--obviously, the mask took on the form of a demon whilst he wore it.

After this battle, Miku finds a Teal Carving, which she can use to enter the Moon Shrine, a yet unexplored area. Beneath it is a dry well, though to continue down it, she needs to defeat the four Headless Priests--they are headless, of course, because Lord Himuro decapitated them.

The Headless Priests speak of The Calamity and Kirie--the Calamity being the name of the event in which the Strangling Ritual failed and the Malice was released. The Strangling Ritual was a ceremony in which the selected maiden would have ropes tied around her neck, wrists, and ankles. She would be sacrificed as the ropes were pulled and tear off her limbs and neck. The bloody ropes known as Laceration Ropes would then be used to seal the Hell Gate--the gate that contains the Malice.

After four difficult battles the priests are defeated, but Miku can still not continue from the Moon Shrine into the Moon Well--one more thing remains. A trail of blood leads Miku to the Grand Hall, where the final battle with Lord Himuro takes place. Once he is defeated, Miku obtains the Master's Seal, and can finally go down into the Moon Well.

There, Miku finds the body of a former Rope Shrine Maiden and the third piece of the Holy Mirror. Like the previous two times, Kirie appears. Miku races up a ladder to escape the Moon Well as the malicious ghost follows. She nearly makes it to the top, and then her foot slips--Kirie is rapidly approaching. She is spared from Kirie, however, by the little girl in the white kimono. This girl has appeared several times to Miku, and is in fact Kirie's younger, untainted self.

Everything begins to glow brightly, and the night is over.

Final Night - Kirie:

Miku awakens in the Koto Room, and this time upon awakening, there are fortunately no menacing rope marks. Some more exploring leads her to a hidden room--the Dungeon where Kirie was kept.

In order to be a successful Rope Maiden, the maiden had to have no will to live at all. She would be kept from society for ten years, completely and utterly alone. However, it appears there are times the Shrine Maiden can leave her dungeon...

Miku sees a vision whilst in the Dungeon--a vision of Kirie standing with a man who looks just like Mafuyu. Miku then finds pieces of Kirie's diary, that talk about the man.

This unnamed man is someone whom Kirie fell in love with, someone who gave her the will to live. As the Family Master and Priests thought him to be a threat to the ritual, he was killed. Kirie later realized that he had been "taken away", and her inner turmoil and sorrow plus a new-found will to live made the Strangling Ritual fail, and the Malice was released.

As Miku leaves the dungeon, Kirie appears once more and chases her until Miku is outside in the Cherry Atrium--the place Kirie and her lover would meet. At this point, Miku enters the Moon Shrine, and goes down again into the Moon Well.

The Moon Well leads to a cavern known as the Hell Pass, and a path that is cut out of the rocks. On this path she sees a vision of Kirie being taken to where the Strangling Ritual would be preformed. Further on the path is a letter from Miku to Mafuyu--it reveals that he would see Miku but she could not see or hear him, just like what Miku had experienced, but reverse. He also tells her more about Kirie--that she is "like a person split in two", and that she spared him because he looked like the man she fell in love with. He wants Miku to "help Kirie if (she) can", and asks her to seal off the Hell Gate with the Holy Mirror.

Further still there are two rooms, Rope Altar and Baptismal Path, where Miku fights two former Rope Shrine Maidens. There is one more room to enter...

Now it's time for the final confrontation with Kirie, in the room where the Hell Gate itself lies.

Mafuyu stands before Miku, Kirie behind him. Pulling her arms around him she declares, "We will always be together!" and absorbs him. A horrified Miku screams "No!" at this awful sight, and their battle begins.

Miku eventually takes Kirie down, and once she is defeated, Miku's camera shatters. Miku had the final piece of the mirror with her all this time--hidden within the Camera Obscura. With all of the pieces, the mirror is reassembled and placed on the mirror stand in front of the Hell Gate, and its power purifies Kirie and seals the gate, freeing the mansion of the Malice's grasp.

As Kirie is purified, Mafuyu is also released from Kirie's absorption of him.

Finally, brother and sister are reunited.

Kirie's younger self appears and tells older Kirie "don't forget your duty." Kirie's duty is to forever guard the Hell Gate, to ensure that the Calamity never happens again--it is a fate that entails nothing but constant pain. The cavern begins to rumble--the rocks will soon collapse on them, and Miku and Mafuyu must escape if they want to survive. Miku pleads with Mafuyu to hurry and leave with her, but Mafuyu refuses. He wants to stay with Kirie, because "(he) thinks (he) can help her."

He would make sure Kirie would never have to be alone ever again--would be with her and ease her suffering, and would give her hope.

Everything once again goes dark.

Miku awakens in front of the mansion--the souls of those trapped there are floating into the sky, finally free.

But she will not have Mafuyu by her side any longer.

Personality: Mafuyu. Mafuyu, Mafuyu, Mafuyu.

Her big brother is her light. She adores him, and the fact that she was willing to explore a terrifying, dangerous haunted mansion is inarguable proof of that. He can see visions just like she can, and as such he is the only one she can speak with about her experiences. She feels safe in his presence, and knows he will protect her and keep her from harm. Due to the fact that their father is presumably dead and their mother committed suicide, Mafuyu is, in Miku's own words, "her only family." He's taken care of her and loved her and as such she is endlessly devoted to this kindhearted man.

Miku is shy, and timid--perhaps even awkward. She feels like an outcast, and is in fact treated like one. She has had a hard time keeping friends and cannot open up to anyone easily, due to the discomfort she feels about her powers. She withdraws around people, and isn't very social. Between the visions, the isolation, and her lack of living parents, it's no wonder she isn't at all comfortable with other people--she hasn't gotten the opportunity to feel comfortable with people. It doesn't help that the visions she sees are often outright traumatizing.

Despite her timidity, she is not cowardly. While she is clearly afraid during the events of Fatal Frame, she fights on. Partially because of her love for Mafuyu, and partially because she is at heart someone pretty courageous.

Miku is very sympathetic person--despite the torment Kirie put her through, she still clearly felt sorrow for the maiden. Through her visions she saw how she suffered whilst she was alive; saw her with her lost love, watched her in distress and not wanting to die, and witnessed the cruel Strangling Ritual. Despite her actions under the taint of the Malice, Miku didn't blame her.

She didn't hate or really blame any of the other ghosts in the mansion, either. They all suffered awful fates, and Miku could no doubt understand their pain--could no doubt understand that it was the Malice that caused all this, not the will of the ghosts themselves. Despite her sympathy, she is very selfish in regards to Mafuyu. She didn't want Mafuyu to stay with Kirie, even if that meant Kirie would be alone forever. She did leave the mansion in the end, if only to honor her brother's wishes.

When she is alone and without Mafuyu for a long time, as would be the case in Jigoku, it's understandable that she may grow distressed, and would feel alone and even depressed. Even so, she has a hopeful side to her personality. Despite it being perfectly possible Mafuyu was dead, she searched the mansion anyway, and didn't stop until she found him.

She is loyal to those she loves and can trust--though it is difficult for her to feel like she can trust someone in the first place. Thus, the only person she would feel this devotion to at present is Mafuyu. She would do anything for him.

Biggest Fear: Losing Mafuyu forever. After what she's experienced in Himuro Mansion, she also feels uneasy around ropes.

Powers: Miku was born with an innate sixth sense. She can sense ghosts even without seeing them and can exorcise them with the Camera Obscura. The visions she sees are activated by simply touching certain objects or walking through certain areas.

SAMPLES:
Third Person: Even though she had only just awoken, she could feel them--the spirits. She could feel their pain, and sorrow, and hatred in the air. She could feel their power.

Yet it was a different feeling than the feeling Himuro Mansion exuded, in whatever small way. Perhaps it was because the ghosts here were different--not that she knew that at the moment. She removed the candy from her mouth with cautious curiosity, and slowly walked about the room. It wasn't a room in the mansion that she had explored.

A quick peek out the window revealed that this, in fact, wasn't the mansion at all.

The slow, dawning realization of this was like a bucket of ice being dropped into her stomach. She had felt so close to finding her brother--to finding Mafuyu--and now...

"What..."

She clasped her hands together in front of her chest.

"Where is this...?"

She took a moment or two to try and make sense of things. She was not in the mansion, and now even farther away from Mafuyu than ever before. But she could get back, right...? There had to be a way--

Her thoughts were interrupted by a spirit floating into the room. It had long, dark hair--a yuurei. Quickly, Miku picked up her camera and took a shot. Thankfully, it didn't seem to be hostile. The spirit flinched, perhaps in pain, and then slid its way out of the room.

Miku wasn't certain of many things right now, but there was one thing that she knew to be fact. This wasn't the mansion, but it had a similar ghostly population.

And probably just as dangerous.

First Person: [The soft voice of a seventeen year old girl can be heard on the feed. She doesn't sound confident, but not exactly terrified either.]

This...it isn't Himuro Mansion, is it...

[Near-inaudible;] There are ghosts here too.

Is anyone listening?

Where am I? I can't stay here.

Is this her doing?

I have to find Mafuyu...! If I'm away from that place I'll never reach him. Unless he's here...?

[She makes a small, worried sound, and the feed shuts off.]

Notes: I've decided to take Miku from the fourth night, but before she reaches the Moon Well. She'll also be bringing with her the Camera Obscura and Type-14 film, the weakest type she has--the camera will be de-powered so that it only weakens the ghosts, and cannot permanently exorcise them.
