The word "retarded" is probably the most common insult I hear. I don't look down on anyone for saying it, because I used to use the word until recently, but working for the Center for Disabled has really opened my eyes to the language that's used by a lot of people. It's so lame to use a condition as an insult. It's just as bad as saying that ( Read more... )

i completely 100000000% agree. i never really used it, but ever since working at arc, hearing that has made me wince. i hate it so much. so many people dont actually think about what they are implying when they say certain things.

for a few years i was a counselor/teacher at their summer camp. it was like 70% developmentally disabled kids & teens and then around 30% non disabled (brothers/sisters/friends, etc.). it was cool to have a mix and see the interactions.
