For only the second time in my life I saw a Pileated Woodpecker. I first noticed the bright red head so turned the canoe around to investigate and there she was. -
It's not the heat it's the stupidity
I didn't realise how hot it was and didn't take enough water with me in the canoe. You can't drink the river water. I also got a bit burned on my face despite the fact that I have the best tan I've had since I was farming 27 years ago ( Read more... ) -

The river feels different now that the cottages are all empty. Not too many people live here all year round. The summer kids are all gone.
I chased a heron up river, it kept moving just enough to feel safe. I never got closer than about 50 feet/15 metres before it flew away. -

Lots of people on the river today. I guess it's the last long weekend of the summer.
Besides the people:- 4 or 5 gar
- a water snake
- a few ducks

It was a bit cooler today on the river and very windy. I was the only one out there. I did see a couple of herons but didn't see a single person, even on the shore. I picked up 3 empty bait cups that were just floating around in a small bay where the current wasn't strong enough to pull them downstream. Even on the river there are litterbugs ( Read more... ) -

Not so good at goodbye
Is it okay to want your daughter to be successful and have great new opportunities while at the same time wishing she would just hang around in Ontario just a bit longer.
We had a great visit with Audra today. This time of year it's hard to think of Ottawa as "The city that fun forgot." -

I saw something swimming on the river and as I got closer, in my canoe, I realised there were beaver there. They really do that tailslap thing when they are startled. I hung around for a while but they didn't come back up. -

Today while canoeing I came across a flock of Canada Geese. I had to paddle through them to continue upriver and when I did they took off. It's kind of neat to be in the middle of a flock and watch them running on top of the water as they take off.
