Some very interesting comments and thoughts here Ian. What I have especially locked into is your comment that if it was a truly spiritual connection with God, she would'nt have used such sexual analogies. I see it very differently. I dont believe that sexuality and spirituality are mutually exclusive zones. If we are made in Gods image then surely our sexuality is part of that image. It is the source of our passion and feeds our sensitivity and therefore enables us to respond to God. Having said that, I feel that Judith deeply understands this. Its not sexual abanonment she seems to be seeking but rather a passionate and pure connection. The star and its reflection in the pool is symbolic of the still and clean and undisturbed (therefore chaste) place where true union with God is possible. This is the true longing of her soul. Here where her inner rose can truelly blossom in truth.

Sorry its taken a while for me to reply, but I just want you to know that you are the very first person I am replying to a comment. (hehe)
Anyway I understand what you say about the sexual stuff and the way I have looked at is with the question; Does the scriptures support the way the poet felt or is it something detestable in God's eyes?
