New films I saw this year, in reverse order of how much I enjoyed them (basically, the last film in this list was amazeface) as kept track of throughout the year on Letterboxd.
  • Dad’s Army - This was terrible. The only good part was Mrs Mainwaring.
  • Anthropoid - I can barely remember this film. I imagine it must have much like any other film based on ( Read more... )

I was expecting to wholeheartedly hate BvS but I really quite enjoyed it! Maybe because it wholeheartedly leaned in to most of the things I generally find ridiculous about super hero movies. GIANT GLOOMY NIETZSCHEAN UBERMENSCHEN BASHING EACH OTHER IN THE SKY WITH LUMPS OF METAL, yeah!

"Solid war movie" is a great one-line review of Rogue One.

It probably helps that I'm quite a fan of Henry Cavill standing about with no shirt on also. And I do genuinely love all the boring Lois and Clark doing regular them being people with jobs stuff (in fact, I'd like more of that. Bruce Wayne and Diana Price too, I am all for heroes doing people things ( ... )

Yes, I think you're right that the superpowers-intersecting-with-ordinary-life is the bit where it starts having thematic resonance and narrative chops and things. I also shipped Clark and Lois far more than I was expecting to. I even liked the excuse-to-objectify-Amy-Adams bathtub scene!

I am endlessly amused by Batman using his enormous wealth to fight all the crime that vast societal inequality creates anyway. Like, why doesn't he invest in drug rehabilitation programmes and job creation schemes? There's a darkness to this whole concept of Good Guy Superheroes being a) incredibly wealthy and b) incredibly violent that I find culturally fascinating.

T'Challa is super-cool though. I guess maybe there's a thing where they show him having this sense of duty and responsibility? So we know that being a king is feeding into how he manages his superpowers in a positive way? I dunno.
