On the edge of a knife (RP, closed to Lelouch)

Feb 24, 2008 20:18

Light glared at Lelouch as his friend dragged him into his dorm room. This was the first time he'd seen the place and he was relieved it was a single - no roommate to interrupt meant that they could discuss things as privately as possible. Assuming, of course, there were no hidden cameras ( Read more... )

"I was surprised you didn't do anything about him yourself." Lelouch sat down on his bed, and patted the space next to him, gesturing Light to sit.

"So...back to our conversation before it was interrupted. Just what is a 'shinigami?'" He looked at the strange creature as he referred to it, and got a very creepy smile in response.

He raised an eyebrow at Lelouch's remark. That was the easiest way to get rid of their snoop without seeming too rude. Light sat down next to him and felt Ryuk hover nearby.

"A god of death. They stay in their world most of the time, taking care of humans whose time has come to die. Ryuk is here because the notebook belongs to him and he can't take it back until the person who first found it is dead." It was all true. But that didn't make it the complete truth.

"So...why do you write in that notebook, if it isn't yours?"

Lelouch was hoping to trap Light--either he wouldn't answer at all, or would lie. Quite frankly, the prince would be very surprised to get a straight answer.

Of course, he could always find out using the Geass, but then Light would be useless to him. That...and Ryuk was staring straight at them. If Ryuk wasn't human, that meant there was a very good chance that the Geass wouldn't work on him, so somehow he'd either have to get Ryuk to leave (likely by having someone take the notebook without Light realizing), or he'd simply have to wait until Ryuk was not with Light.

Both would take much more effort, and Lelouch had no reason to put that much work into finding out more.

He'd never said the notebook wasn't his. But the question was worded strangely - if he made a casual excuse, his protectiveness towards it would seem odd; if he didn't answer at all, it would be suspicious. "It's not from this world, so I'm curious to see if there's anything special about it. Ryuk won't tell anyone one way or the other."

Curiosity was the inital reason he used it, that much was true. But Ryuk had told the police some details, and Light knew almost everything there was to know about the notebook's qualities. The shinigami remained silent, choosing to stay close to Light until asked otherwise.

"Being normal has worked so far." Lelouch smiled a little.

"Beyond that, we need to keep blame for deaths off Kira. We can't have people thinking he's come to this campus, it will incite too much of a panic."

Which...would be bad. Light was already under surveillance--the red-head had made that clear.

"I've only killed when it was necessary - certain people simply can't be allowed to live in the world I'm creating." Endai wasn't quite his world, but it was connected to it. "But if I have to do it again, I'll be even more careful."

The redhead had him worried, though. Who else here know about Kira well enough to be investigating him? Hopefully the responsible party wasn't also monitoring Lelouch, or they were both as good as dead after this conversation. Light would have to try and figure that out later.

For now, though, he'd try to be "normal".

"If it's normal to let everyone keep assuming more about us than there is, I'm fine with that." What had happened last time was a fluke, he told himself. It was Lelouch's brain he enjoyed, nothing more.

"Don't worry, I'm not under surveillance. And right now, everyone thinking we're an item isn't going to be anything important anyway."

I have to find out how that notebook works...

"You're sure?" He was going to assume his room was bugged, and never use the notebook openly or talk to Ryuk in it again. Acting aware of their presence or removing them would be suspicious.

It didn't matter what other people thought, especially after that scene outside, but Light wondered what Lelouch thought of this arrangement. He wouldn't say his own feelings about it first.

Since Ryuk wasn't around to give unneeded information, Light grabbed the Death Note, opened it, and silently showed his friend the section of the page with their earlier harasser's death written down. "If you can't read this, tell me." The name was English, but not what came after.
