blog spam: online video

Nov 11, 2005 11:40

According to NPR's Marketplace the other day, a leaked memo from Microsoft revealed their joint plans with the Associated Press to provide news video online. Apparently news circulation rates have been dropping recently (and of course, the internet is presumed the guilty party). Anyhow, I was particularly tickled by this bit of news, because I've ( Read more... )

I'm not going to reply to your other blog because I dislike it's interface, but I'll reply here so you get mailed. Why bother with two different blog interfaces and resyndicating through LJ anyway? -shrug ( ... )

1. Availability of bandwidth - This is coming, and the saturation of Cable and DSL has finally reached a high point in most major cities, which is good. Rural areas continue to be covered by satellite -- but VOD over satellite is rough.
How much excess capacity do you imagine is in DSL? Isn't HDTV signal coming in at something like 20Mbit/s? My expectation is that the advent of HDTV and hybrid TV/computer content for the masses will break DSL. That technology is fine for downloading text pages and low res media, but when people are expecting their digital convergence box to handle HDTV on demand, they're only going to be satisfied with cable.

3. Ease of Storage - When places like GCATT (Georgia Tech's center for advanced commuications) tried to do video-on-demand back in 1997 (I was there visiting at the time) the storage was so expensive it was cost prohbitive to digitize and store vast amounts of video. It was hard to even begin to imagine what we're doing now ( ... )

(had to post this in a seperate comment, apparently LJ has a 4300 character limit.)

All of the signs are there for it too. It's difficult to hire computer geeks now, salaries are going up, and I've had calls on a near daily basis from recruiters.

Time to get some investment money together, I think.

thanks for your comments -- i'm mostly thinking about the cultural impact of this sort of thing, so it's really helpful to hear more about the tech/business side.

neither of these were really your main point, but a couple quick responses:

livejournal blogs mostly reach other livejournal users, and i'm aiming for both a broader audience and more professional tone with my style over content blog. but for all my friends on lj, it's easier to get that blog as a syndication feed here, so it will show up on their friends' pages. my lj will continue to be for more personal thoughts, weekly updates on my life, setlists, dumb quizzes, etc., while i try to put more ordered, critical thoughts on my other blog (which i'm linking to here while i try to build up readership).

I'd even go as far as to say that we're on the beginning of a new ( ... )

I think there's a significant cultural impact because the technology changes that are happening in my industry changes the way people communicate, and their cultural experience is changed by the way they access that information of their culture and others.

When I first got into this industry I had deep feelings for the way that we were changing the world. I knew that with every network link I set up, every community I connected that somehow we made a difference. That emotion rode high during the .com boom. Sure, we were consumptous whores, but we really thought we were doing something important ( ... )
