Character Name:Isshin Kurosaki
Fandom:Bleach
Gender:Male
Age: Appears 30-40, but could be well over two hundred years old
Sexuality (if applicable): Heterosexual
Original or Anomaly?:Original
Appearance:
Shinigami Garb,
Regular Clothing Isshin is a tall, rugged looking man with an upright hair style. His black hair carries into his side burns and a perpetual five o’clock shadow that lingers on the edges of his face. He is 6’1, much taller than most of the Bleach cast, and usually towers above characters in a scene. Isshin has a lot of muscle, and it shows. Though, his muscle mass is about average for a man that goes the gym three times a week. His average clothing varies from day to day but he tends to stick to fine shirts and on occasion a suit. Of course, when at his clinic he wears common doctor attire. His shinigami outfit is a stock example with little modification except that he wears a blank cloth rather than one displaying his unit or division number.
Personality:
At first glance Isshin Kurosaki is a loud, over-energetic, silly man. His attempts at teaching his children lessons involve surprise attacks, often fighting with his son Ichigo. To his discontent, Isshin finds himself out of the loop with his children’s lives, continually trying to get them to open up to him. Unfortunately his tactics are usually outlandish and his children consider him more-or-less an embarrassment. During his most bewildered moments he runs to a giant poster of his deceased wife and passionately questions her, wondering why his children are so detached, further increasing their discomfort around him.
This is, however, a front for his more serious and caring attitude. Believing in a more hands off parenting approach, allowing his children to make mistakes on their own, he is still aware of everything that occurs to them. Despite Ichigo’s nigh futile attempts to keep his life as shinigami a secret Isshin was aware from first time he fought a hollow. Not wanting to interfere, he shows his sensitive side by giving Ichigo what he calls a good luck charm, in truth being a protection talisman against hollows.
Isshin’s conversations also tend to differ based on what attitude he’s currently employing. While among the general populace, Isshin exaggerates, yelling and whining for what mostly consists of comical banter. For instance, when told by Karin that he is an idiot for wanting to see ghosts, he runs up to the huge poster of his wife screaming about how his children disrespect his father, mimicking a child’s behavior. However, when a more serious approach is required, Isshin completely changes disposition. His sentences become succinct, saying exactly what he needs to without the childlike exaggeration he employed before. Conversations alone with Ryuuken Ishida or Kisuke Urahara usually entail this, though he is not above joking around when given the chance. After he reacquaints with Urahara his dialogue consists of phrases that are considerably to the point than they are among his children.
Overall, Isshin has a bit of brashness in him in any situation, which annoys some of his friends and his children. Isshin tries to keep himself informed about the spiritual world regardless of his place within it. He is aware of much of the current goings on within Soul Society and is an acquaintance of Kisuke Urahara and friends with Ryuuken Ishida. Isshin also displays his somber aspects by holding a deep respect for his wife, choosing to smoke one cigarette on the anniversary of her death.
History:
It is currently unknown when or where Isshin Kurosaki was born, though he is likely at least 100 years old and lived in Soul Society for a good length of time. There he worked his way from the Shinigami Academy to the Gotei 13 as Captain of the 3rd Division before becoming fed up with the attitudes of the other Shinigami Captains. Left with a single option to retire, he left Soul Society and moved to the world of the living where he has resided since.
Nearly eighty years after he departed from Soul Society, Isshin becomes a doctor, choosing to fully endow himself with life among the living. Around this time he meets Ryuuken Ishida, fellow physician and a notable Quincy. In spite of their opposing personalities, they maintain a relatively friendly association and enjoy each other’s company.
Yet, Isshin still fights as a Shinigami. When hollows appear he feels that it is his duty to protect the world he now inhabits. This continues until he meet Masaki. Isshin is spellbound and, after becoming acquainted, they fall in love. Soon after, they marry and settle down in the suburbs of Karakura Town. At first this gives Isshin more resolve to fight the hollows. He believes that he has a personal stake the world of the living, but it quickly turns out to be too precarious. There is both the challenge of Soul Society finding him, and the hollows themselves. Not wanting to risk Masaki’s safety he abandons his Shinigami powers, and converts their house into a clinic so he can always be nearby.
Later, their family begins to grow with the birth of Ichigo soon followed by the births of their daughters, Karin and Yuzu, and Isshin starts to focus more on taking care of his family. Alas, Isshin is heartbroken when he is unable to protect Masaki from being killed by a hollow, the Grand Fisher. He blames himself for allowing the event to occur but decides that it is more important to be strong for his children developing a sillier and carefree attitude towards them.
However, to honor her he brings Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu to their mother’s grave every year on the anniversary of her death. As part of the tradition, he smokes one cigarette on her grave because while they were dating, Masaki thought it made him look cool.
Six years pass since her death, and Isshin witnesses Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu become more spiritually aware. He pretends to have no awareness of spirits in general, feigning bafflement at how his children are able to see ghosts. His concern increases when he realizes Ichigo has become a soul reaper like he once was. Preferring to let his son learn what it means to be a Shinigami, he leaves Ichigo alone, only giving him a protection talisman to shield Ichigo’s body while his spirit is away.
While Ichigo is in Soul Society to rescue Rukia, he decides that the city is no longer safe enough for him to continue to hide himself. He regains his Shinigami abilities, though does not recover them to perfect form. After Ichigo returns, a breed of hollow known as the arrancar begins to attack Karakura Town. The Grand Fisher, now an incomplete arrancar, goes after Ichigo’s body whilst he is distracted elsewhere. Isshin defeats the Grand Fisher with a single cut of his blade, finally gaining his revenge for the death of his wife.
Seeing the arrival of a near complete arrancar, Kisuke Urahara comes to the scene, they discuss the current situation and the both depart. Isshin remains mostly quiet during the arrancar invasion, though he goes searching for Ryuuken afterwards. To Ryuuken’s chagrin, Isshin manages to find his hidden training centre underneath Karakura hospital, and they talk about their sons. Isshin admits that feels that he’s failed his children by letting them feel that they’re alone in their experiences.
Strengths:
The base abilities of any soul reaper consist of sensing reiatsu and the ability to see and communicate with the dead. At his weakest, Isshin is Captain level shinigami with an overwhelming reiatsu. For a sample of his ability, he is capable of disposing of incomplete arrancar in a single hit. He loses no momentum throughout the attack, slicing through both the Grand Fisher and his zanpakutou. Given that he has had years of training in Soul Society working his way up to Captain level, Isshin is a master swordsman, with a proficiency in kido, given that he knows how to enchant objects with binding spells. In addition, this would also imply that he has a high expertise in shunpo and is capable of moving at great distances in a matter of steps. He is also strong from a hand-to-hand perspective, matching evenly in physical bouts with Ichigo.
Tools
• Zanpakutou - Currently Unknown though it bears resemblance to a
Tachi, and is strong enough to defeat a mid level strength hollow in a single attack.
• Protection Talismans - formed by using Kido.
Weaknesses:
Isshin is not currently at full strength and is slowly recovering the true extent of his powers. Other possible weaknesses include his children, should they be endangered. Otherwise both his true strength and weakness are unknown and can only be guessed at.
First Person Sample:
Hey….[He sounds almost drunk, his weight shifting between his legs occasionally falling to one end, before stumbling to another. His voice has a thin slur to it.] This ain’t the washroom. [He looks around, partially trying assess where he is, partially trying not to vomit. He is about to topple over.] YU-zu! What’s going on up here!
[He finally drops, landing on something round that he hadn’t noticed before this. He picks it up from under him. ] What the hell? [It’s a small spherical object. Isshin pulls himself off the ground and looks at it and lets it drop. It hovers instead. Finally absorbing his surroundings, his mind becomes clearer.] What the hell is all this? I was upstairs, and then BAM, I’m here. Well, I’m not dead. I’ve already died.
[Looks down.] Then there’s this jumpsuit. And nope, there’s nothing I had before...except for these cigarettes. Is this one of Kisuke’s ploys? [Walks to a wall and taps it.] Nah, the material isn’t right. This place is too much…but there’s no point just hanging around here. Better take a look around.
Third Person Sample:
“T-This is impossible!”
Before the hollow knew it was dead, Isshin had killed it. His sword cut through its head, right through its zanpakuto and divided it cleanly in half. It was its own fault. Isshin had tried to warn him. It didn’t know the basics. Bigger swords never meant more power. Remembering the size of Ichigo’s own sword, size usually meant the opposite. The thought lingered briefly, though he soon moved passed the idea. The point was that hollow was dead. The Grand Fisher was dead.
Despite what it had done, Isshin couldn’t say that he hated it. The Grand Fisher had killed his wife and traumatized his son, but exacting revenge was not going to return what he had lost. He should have been there to protect Masaki, to protect Ichigo. He didn’t have the power then. Now, he did. Still, the victory felt emptier than he thought it would be. It was just another hollow, and he was doing what he used to do. Purifying them.
Twenty years ago, he had abandoned these powers. He did so hoping he would never have to use them again. He didn’t want to endanger his family. As long as he didn’t have them, he wouldn’t have to fight and hollows wouldn’t want to fight him. He yearned that Karin, Yuzu, and Ichigo would live average lives. Getting them dragged into the world he once lived in was not his intention. Ichigo was strong. By the time he was ten, Isshin knew that his spiritual power would be immense. He had tried to take precautions against it. But then the hollows started appearing more frequently. The local shinigami, Rukia, wouldn’t be able to handle it. It all spiraled into the moment the hollow had burst into his home; when Ichigo became a Soul Reaper.
And this is what it had led to. Standing at the corpse of the hollow that had murdered his beloved and waiting for the world to respond. Isshin had done what was necessary and recovered his lost abilities. It had been decades since his shinigami garb ruffled among the night winds. Although, now that he was wearing them he had to admit he liked the feel. It was as if had removed a layer of skin only to find a more familiar layer under it. His gi, and his zanpakuto were in the same working order as before, albeit a little less powerful. Isshin felt he could make the difference in time for a serious fight.
“Did you have your revenge?” The nasally voice came from behind him. It was immediately recognizable, as if he could forget it. Isshin already knew the answer to his question. He had gotten it mid way through swinging down his sword.
“So, you came Urahara.”
