PotC 4 - On Stranger Tides

May 30, 2011 23:27

I'm a little surprised there have been so few posts about On Stranger Tides, but my reaction in short was: I enjoyed it, but it didn't give me the same sense of excitement that the first and to some extent the second movie did. A few more spoilery thoughts under the cut. Also, there are spoilers in the comments.

There's something that has occurred to me since seeing OST. When Barbossa sacrificed his crew to the mermaids because he was desperate to kill Blackbeard, it reminded me vividly of Elizabeth sacrificing Jack to the Kraken. So although I'm a Sparrabeth fan, perhaps those who favour an Elizabeth/Barbossa pairing have got it right. Lizzie has the heart of a pirate, but she's more like Barboss than Jack!

Just my opinion, for what it's worth!

Real life has been incredibly hectic and I can only apologise again for the delay in answering. Interesting point! I think Elizabeth can be ruthless if she feels it's necessary, whereas Barbossa might do things to be cruel. But I'm not averse to reading Elizabeth/Barbossa myself, if it's well-written, so I can imagine that there might be some common ground between them, at least with the Barbossa of the sequels.

It's interesting but I suspect T & T deliberately introduced the 'mast scene' to destroy what many fans saw as a burgeoning romance between Jack and Lizzie. The reason they gave for Lizzies's actions - guilt over her attraction to Jack - was a bit lame. I mentioned this on another site, but I think it would have made more sense if Will had chained Jack to the mast. He was the only person to have good reason to be mad at Jack, after all he had sent him to The Flying Dutch under false pretenses. And he might have misinterpreted that kiss as Jack taking advantage of Lizzie while they were marooned together. If this had happened it would have meant that Will becoming Captain of the Flying Dutch was in a way his penance.

Although he wouldn't have used a kiss to betray his former friend of course unless it was to please those of us who like slash!!

I've given up trying to interpret anything T&T wrote or said about the movies, but I do find it likely that the mast scene was meant as an end point. I think that, for T&T, the J/E elements were simply a plot device thrown in to set up a conflict between Elizabeth and Will in AWE. But Will did have good reason to be angry with Jack, and if they had taken the approach you suggest instead, it would certainly have put whole different spin on the story!

This is a completely different subject but what do other Johnny Depp fans think of Disney suddenly pulling the plug on the Lone Ranger? If this is the wrong place to post this topic I apologise, and can someone please direct me to the right website.

Personally I feel for him - he's been trying to get this project off the ground for ages.

There aren't that many who will see you comment here, since it's my personal journal, but try Johnny Depp fan sites, like for example Depp Impact and Johnny Depp Zone, where they have discussion forums (I checked the latter and they are indeed talking about it in the News & Views forum). I imagine there are JD communities here on LJ, too, if you search for them!

Just mentioning this as it's the OST thread...

I've just gotten hold of the OST dvd and although the picture quality is great the film is astonishingly short of extras - the original 3 were loaded with them, but this one featured bloopers, and not much more apart from a shameful plug for other Disney films. The only copy of the movie to feature deleted scenes is a version only available at Sainbury's. I think this is a disgrace and a lot of fans on the JohnnyDepp Zone are similarly annoyed.

Is this due to the change of director I wonder?
