Have you heard of 'Abjection'? It's a concept I've only recently come across - ajection is an experience of horror, disgust, repulsion, triggered by things we repressed, that threaten the distinction between 'self' and 'other' (such as being confronted by death, because we literally see how we merge with physical matter and the boundaries fade). It's difficult to explain briefly.
