health question for hivemind

So I don't have dental insurance, and I'm pretty sure my gums are receding in a couple places. I'm getting a softer toothbrush, brushing more often, and swishing thoroughly with salt water, but I don't have access to proper treatment (gum grafts, deep cleaning, anything that requires seeing an actual dentist - I don't have money for that and there ( Read more... )

Flossing is the biggie. Soft toothbrush is good. You know how some people's toothbrushes get that weird splayed look after a few weeks? Your toothbrush should never look like that. If it gets like that you're doing it wrong.

Flossing will get the gunk out from under your gums and between your teeth which makes the gums irritated which makes them recede. It might make you irritated for the first week if you haven't been flossing, and then it will get better. If I slack of on flossing I usually get a little gum bleeding the first couple of days but then it gets better pretty quickly.
