Chapter 3
Everyone in this world has a friend. Some you have them since childhood, while others, you just met them recently. Some are your best friends and the others are just plain friends. And ‘#1 Enemy’ turns to ‘Best Friend’ is possible to happen. But what if you had a friend and you haven’t seen her for years because the two of you have been separated. And then after all those years you’ve just remembered her because of an accident. Will you go look for her even though you’re not sure if she can remember you? Will you cross the oceans and the mountains just to see her again? Well that’s what Jun is about to do, his going to fly back to Japan just to look for his long lost friend. Even though all he had is a picture with her when they where still a kid.
Matsumoto Jun comes from a decent family. They don’t own any companies or anything, their just RICH. His father is a famous lawyer and his mother is a well- known writer. Jun was the only child that’s why he grew to be a quite person.
Jun was a smart kid. He is always the top of the class. His I.Q. is above average and for a kid his not that friendly. That’s why his usually alone especially in school. His not even into playing, all he wants to do is to read a book. For Jun the only friend he had is his Grandma.
Jun grew with his Grandma; because his parents are always busy that’s why he is always left with her and because his parents don’t want to have maids for no apparent reason, Grandma lives with them. Jun enjoyed every moment they spent together. His Grandma always bring him to the park, although he doesn’t want to because there’s to many people and he finds it really noisy, he has no choice but to come or else he’ll be left in the house alone.
One day when his Grandma takes him to the park he makes sure he brings his favorite book, ‘The Frog Prince’. Jun was just sitting on one of the bench enjoying his book while his Grandma buys him a drink. Suddenly something caught his attention, a girl from the other bench is crying. He doesn’t know what got into him but he approaches the girl. The girl looks younger than him.
“Hello! Are you ok?” Jun ask the girl as he sit next to her. The girl just looks at him teary eyed then shakes her head.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” Jun ask all concern.
“No the other girls stole my doll” the little girl says.
“Oh I thought its something serious.” Jun says with an inaudible voice.
“It is serious it’s my favorite doll.” The little girl says while standing up.
“You want to get the doll back?”
“Yes”
“Why don’t you go get it?”
“The girls are bigger than me…and beside I was crying the whole time and didn’t see where they go…I can’t find them.” The little girl says while looking around the park.
Jun smirk “do you want to go look for them and get your doll back? I can help you…maybe I’m bigger than them.”
“Ummmm….actually it’s ok…I’m planning to buy a new doll anyway.” She says while looking at Jun.
Jun has a confused look on his face. “I thought it’s your favorite… Why are you crying then?”
“Because I’m lost… I can’t find my bodyguards” the little girl says
“You have bodyguards?” Jun asked.
“Yes, my daddy says I’m not safe without my bodyguard” she says while putting her hand at her waist. “What is that a book?”
“Yes, it’s my favorite book… want to read?”
The little girl’s face is indescribable. “Ewww…you read books like that? It doesn’t even have pictures on it. I think it’s boring.”
“No it’s not its really enjoyable. By the way I’m Jun, and you are?”
“Mao”
Suddenly a group of men appear. They are all wearing a black suit and black sunglasses. Then one of them says “Oh thank god you’re safe! We’ve been all around for you Mao”
“See I told you I got bodyguards” Mao says proudly.
Then Jun’s Grandma arrived with a bottle of juice. “What happen here? Is there a problem mister? Jun what happen?” she asked all confuse.
“He helps me!” Mao interrupted.
“Really?” his Grandma asked.
“Yes, and were going to play tomorrow! Were going to meet in this park, don’t worry I’ll bring a lot of toys.” Mao said while looking at Jun “ok see you tomorrow! Ja ne!”
As Mao and her bodyguards go, Jun and his Grandma was left there still standing. Suddenly Jun said something. “You’ll take me to this park tomorrow right Grandma?” his Grandma was shocked at his grandson’s question. “I won’t if you don’t want to.”
“No! We’ll go…” Jun says, and then he sits in the bench and continues reading his favorite book. Then as his Grandma watch him, his Grandma can’t help but smile.
The next day, after school Jun immediately goes home and asks his Grandma to bring him at the park.
“Let’s go…let’s go!”
“Wait sweetheart I’m looking for my camera.”
“What for?” Jun asked.
“Well I’ll take a picture of you and your friend…Oh here is it, I found it. Now let’s go!”
Jun and his Grandma arrive at the park quickly because it’s just near their house. As they made their way to the bench where they meet yesterday, they were surprise to see Mao already there waiting. As soon as Mao saw them she immediately stands and wave at them.
“Sorry were late.” Grandma says.
“It’s ok…we’ve just arrive… I brought two bikes is it ok with you” she asks Jun.
“Wait before the two of you starts to play can I take a picture of the two of you first?” Grandma asked.
“Oh… I love pictures!” Mao said all excited.
The two of them smiles for the camera. Jun was just standing there while Mao did the popular ‘V’ sign. “Ok ready…1…2…3…” then there goes the flash of the camera.
The two were enjoying each others company. “You know what Jun, you’re like an older brother that I’ve always wish for.” Mao says with a smile.
“Well you’re the first friend I’ve ever had.” Jun answer her.
“Really?” Mao stops her bikes.
“Yes!” Jun says as he continue to bike. “c’mon let’s go their”
“Wait!” Mao says laughing.
Mao and Jun always meet at the park after school rain or shine. They’ve been doing it for a couple of months now. And they’ve became really close. Mao always brings the toys, she even ask her dad to buy her ‘robots’ and ‘toy cars’ so that she and Jun can use it. Mao was 4 yrs. Younger than Jun. Jun was already 9 yrs. Old when they met. But for them age doesn’t matter as long as they enjoy each others company.
One day when the two of them meet at the park Jun says something important.
“Mao, after this week I guess I wont be able to play in the park with you again…” Jun said in a serious tone.
Mao was shocked on what Jun had just said “what? Why?”
“My parents say were moving to U.S…my mom has this book to write and it will be sponsored by someone in U.S. and I guess my dad also has a client there.” He said, a little bit sad.
“Oh…” Mao didn’t know what to say
There’s a complete silence for a second then Mao decide to say something.
“I’ll wait for you…here in this park…I’ll wait for you to come back…you’ll come back right?”
Jun just look at her didn’t know what to answer.
“You’ll come back right?” Mao asks again, but now sounding a bit sad.
“Of course I’ll come back…I will…I promise…” Jun said.
The two of them made a promise that they’ll never forget each other. After that week Jun and his family left Japan. And not like in Japan Jun made a lot new friends in U.S. but his still looking forward to see Mao again someday.
Years past and Jun was about to finish college. He graduated in high school with good grades and follows his father’s foot step in becoming a lawyer. He was now leaving alone in a small apartment. One day his father decided to visits Jun in his apartment. As soon as Jun heard the knock from the door he immediately opens it and was surprise on which he saw. He saw his father, Jun wasn’t expecting it. He hasn’t seen his father for so many years since he decided to live on his own when he was 20 yrs. Old. His mother is calling him once in a week but not his dad; he hadn’t heard about him for a long time, unless his in the news. They both stood there for a couple of minutes both looking at each other, finally his father spoke up.
“Aren’t you going to let me in and ask if I want some cup of coffee? I know you miss me but you don’t need to look at me like that…”
Jun moved to the side to give way for his father.
“You’re shocked aren’t you?” his father asks. “Me too I didn’t expect that I’ll come here today.”
Jun just stood there quite. He really didn’t expect it. He still hasn’t recovered from what had happen. “Do you want something to drink?” he asks.
“No I’m just here to drop by… your mother and I had receive an invitation for your graduation and we’re both glad to see your name in the list.” His father took a small blue envelop from his suitcase and show it to Jun.
“Oh... Is that all?” Jun didn’t mean to be cold; he just doesn’t know what to say.
“And I want to ask you something?” his father ask. Jun just look at him.” What’s your plan after you graduate? Your mother’s been bugging me to ask you this for the past few days…I guess she’s worried” but the truth is his is the one who wants to know what Jun’s plan after his graduation.
“My plan?” Jun didn’t expect that question. “Ummm…. I’m planning to take up the board exams and continue to study to obtain my masters degree.”
After hearing what his son just said Mr. Matsumoto can’t help but smile. ‘At least he already has plans’ he said to himself. “good…oh by the way your grandma called last night… she wants to congratulate you…why don’t you try to call her next time…she’ll be pleased to hear your voice.” After that he stands up and fixes his dress. “I’ll be going now; I still have a case to take care of. See you at your graduation.”
His father left and Jun was still staring at the door where he last saw him. He really didn’t expect him to come. He let himself fall in the couch and sigh heavily. “My plans” he kept repeating those words as if it was a big problem that he needed to solve as soon as possible.
The day of Jun’s graduation finally arrived. Everyone was excited specially his mom. His father was so happy to but knowing his father he won’t show it especially in front of everyone. But you can see it in his face and in his smile that he is really happy.
After the ceremony everyone congratulated Jun and his parents from his professors, block mates even the dean of the school everyone knows him. Jun was very famous at their University, not only because his is the only Asian at their batch but because his grades are something to be proud of.
Few years have again past. Now Jun is taking up his master’s degree at the same University he attended before, Yale University. He took up the board exams and he passed, now his a licensed lawyer. He ask his father if he could help him in some of his case but his father decline and told him that if his taking up his masters degree he should concentrate their first. Jun was left no choice but to obey his father.
Until one day his parents had called him and told him the news he doesn’t want to and he wasn’t expecting to hear. His grandmother was very ill; she was in the hospital for two weeks now and she was not doing well. She’s been having some medication but it’s no good.
After hearing the news his parents and Jun immediately fly back to Japan. Because his fathers has so many connections they immediately had a flight going to Japan the night after they heard the news.
They’ve arrived at Japan the following night. Everyone was exhausted in the flight, but on their way going to their old house something caught Jun’s attention, Jun exhaustion was gone after seeing the park near there old house. He doesn’t know why but he feels some what happy after seeing that place. They arrive at their old house, it was already late. His Grandma was staying there for the past few days; she told the doctor that if she stays in the hospital she’ll get sicker, so the doctor let his Grandma stay at the house where in there is a nursing checking him every hour and a doctor checking her every two days. The nurse welcomes them.
“Welcome back, Mr. And Mrs. Matsumoto…”the nurse says as if she knows them already.
“Where’s mom?” Mrs. Matsumoto asks.
“She’s already taking her rest on her room…she wants to wait for your arrival but she said she’s too tired.” the nurse answer
“So how is she?” Mr. Matsumoto asked.
“She’s much better now, compare to the past few day she was in the hospital.”
“Good…” Mrs. Matsumoto said in relief.
Suddenly Jun who was just listening to their conversation spoke up. “I’m just going to my old bedroom and rest…I’m really tired…” Jun go upstairs directly to his old room. When Jun opens the door he laughs, nothing change, and it still look the same. He then go sit on the bed “it’s so small…I can’t sleep with this” then he continue to look around the room and realize as a kid his not normal. There are no toys even a single one. It’s full of book then he stands up from the bed and look at the shelves he was looking for something, a book. “AH! Here is it…” he pulled one book ‘The Frog Prince’ his favorite. “I miss this…” he then tries to lie comfortably to his small bed and starts to read the book and before he knows it he was off to dream land.
The next morning Jun woke up very early. His body was aching and his stomach was grumbling. He decided to go to his grandma’s room, he hasn’t seen her for years, and he misses her so much. When he reaches his Grandma’s room, he knocks on the door and opens it. His Grandma was sitting on chair knitting. Jun poke his head from the door and say “GRANDMA!!”
His Grandma looks at him and smile. “OH MY…JUN IS THAT YOU” his grandma was so shocked seeing him “you’re so handsome and tall…I didn’t recognize you.”
Jun enter the room and walk towards his grandma, his Grandma reach for him and hug him. “How are you?” Jun asks.
“I’m ok now…you guys don’t need to worry…I’m already old and getting sick is part of it.” Grandma answer him “how about you? How’s life in there?”
“It’s ok…its fun…but still I miss Japan…I miss talking to Japanese people…”
Jun and Grandma is been talking to each other for a couple of hour now. Both of them have so many stories to tell. But then his Grandma ask him one question “Jun, do you want to go on the park?” Jun didn’t know what to say, it’s good thing his mother knock from the door and open it.
“Hey… I know that two of you miss each other so much, but the two of you already miss breakfast now it’s time for Lunch.” Mrs. Matsumoto said while looking at the two of them.
“Grandma Do you want me to help you…” Jun ask all concerned.
“No…I’m perfectly fine…” his grandma stands up from his chair as if she doesn’t have a sick, she is fine, Jun thought. He was about to leave his Grandma’s room when something from the window caught his attention. It’s a small photo frame, and the picture that is inside it is something Jun Didn’t expect to see. Jun got closer to the window and picks the photo frame so he could see the picture clearer. After seeing the picture Jun change his gaze and look at the window, he was shocked. It was a nice view of the park, suddenly Jun lips broke into a smile, now he remember why he suddenly felt so happy while seeing that park on their way to there old house last night.
Days have past and Jun and his parents was already scheduled to go back to U.S.
Jun’s been thinking of a lot of stuffs lately but then now his sure on what he will do. The night before their flight Jun decided to talk to his parents. He knocks on the door on their bedroom and waited for a response.
“Come in…” his fathers said. Jun enters the room, his parents wasn’t expecting him there.
“I have to tell something important” Jun said. There was a complete silence until Jun decided to speak up again. “I’ve decided… that… I want to stay here in Japan.”
His father was shocked, but then his mother said with a smile “ok then you’ll stay…” but his father protested. “Wait! Why? I want a reasonable answer from you Jun” his father stated sounding a bit angry.
“Honey let him be his already old enough to live on his own.” Mrs. Matsumoto said in a calming tone trying to calm his husband.
“Because I want to live here in Japan” Jun said. “Don’t worry you don’t have to send me some money…I have my savings and I’m already a licensed lawyer I’ll work and if you’re worrying about my studies I’ll continue it here in Japan and… I’ll accompany grandma she maybe look ok but we’ll never know what will happen she’s already old.”
Actually there’s still one more reason, his going to look for a girl, but he choose not to say it because her parents might not allow him to stay here in Japan if that the case. They might think his staying just to hunt for girls.
His father looks at him and sighs as if he just loses a case “alright then… you could stay…”
Jun can’t help but smile. He was expecting more shouting and some violent reaction but it never happen. Their flight was supposed to be tomorrow night but it was move because of the changes that Jun will not come anymore. Jun sends off his parents at the airport his Grandma wants to come, but they won’t let her. After they kiss and hug goodbye’s his father ask him to go because if he stays the worst that could happen is his mom will cry, and both him and his father doesn’t like that. Jun took a cab, because he doesn’t have a car, ‘that’s the first thing I’ll buy’ Jun thought to himself. When Jun arrived at the house the nurse welcome him. “Mr. Matsumoto…your grandma wants to see you…”
“Please just call me Jun…” he smiles “is she in her room?”
“Yes she is Matsumo---err Jun.”
“You’ll get use to it…I’ll go then see you around….”
Jun knock at the door and opens it. “I’m back…”
“So how was your mom?” his grandma asks.
“She’s on the verge of crying before I left…I guess she’ll miss me…”
His grandma laughs so hard. Then he asks a question “so… what’s your plan?”
‘There goes that question again…why does everyone ask the same question to me…do I look like someone who doesn’t have as future…’ Jun said to himself. “I’m going to look for a part time job for the mean time…and I’m going to apply as a new student at Tokyo University…I’m going to continue my studies…”
“Aren’t you going to look for her?” his grandma who was now looking outside the window asks him.
“Eh?”
“You two made a promise right…and it is one of the reasons you’d like to stay here in Japan right…to look for HER” his grandma put emphasize on the word ‘her’.
Jun remain silent. ‘How did she found out? Am I to obvious?’ he asks himself mentally.
“Last time when I got back here in my room… the picture that was place by the window was now place in the table beside the door” his grandma said as if reading his mind.
Jun suddenly remember the incident. He was holding the photo frame when suddenly his mother calls him. He immediately goes outside the room until he realizes that he was still holding the photo frame. He instantaneously go to his grandma’s room in a hurry because his mother is keep on calling him so he just place it in the first table he saw which is the table near the door.
“I don’t even remember her name…” Jun said while sitting on his grandma’s bed.
“Well I don’t either…” his Grandma said. Actually she knows the little girls name, she just feels like its better if he remembers it for himself. Jun just heave a sigh. It’s a good thing someone knocks at the door, the atmosphere inside the room was getting a bit awkward.
“Ummm… sorry to interrupt, but the dinners ready” the nurse said.
Days have past so quickly and today was Jun’s first day at Tokyo University, it’s a good thing his grade are decent so he got accepted quickly. He was being assisted by a law student who’s taking up his master’s degree to, Yamashita Tomohisa. Both of them get along very well. The two of them where in the library, reading some books while they waited for their next class.
“Ummm… Jun I just really need to go in the bath room…I’ll leave you here for a while…I’ll be back as soon as possible” Yamapi said as he quickly stands and ran at the door. Suddenly the cell phone on the table rang. Jun look at it “oh… he left his phone…” the phone wasn’t on silent so everyone could hear it. Jun could feel all the eyes are staring at him. So he decided to answer the phone. It might be an emergency, he told himself. Before he could say hello the girl from the other line spoke. Jun feels something weird, ‘that voice’ he thought.
“Ummm sorry…” Jun said, not knowing what to say.
“Who’s this?” the girl from the other line asks.
“Oh sorry… Yamashita-san just went to the restroom he’ll be back soon. He left his phone here in the library and it wasn’t on silent so I answered it caused everyone is looking. I’m Matsumoto Jun the new Law student.”
“Oh… sorry for the bother…could you tell Yamapi that I call”
“Yes...”
“Arigato Matsumoto-san” then the girl from the other line hangs up. Not so long after his conversation on the girl Yamapi arrive.
“Ummm… Yama----err Yamapi someone called you” Jun said, Yamapi told him to not call him so formally and just call him ‘Yamapi’, no he knows how the nurse in their house felt.
“Really? Who?” Yamapi asks him.
“I don’t know…sorry if I answer it…I wasn’t on silent and I thought maybe it’s something serious…”
“No no no…it’s alright…” Yamapi smile then he then go check on his phone who call him, then his smile got bigger, he then ask Jun “Jun… are you hungry? We still have an hour before our next class; do you want to have lunch first?”
“Sure…actually I am starving” Jun said.
“Good! Cause I also want you to meet my girlfriend…his also a law student…”
“Wow! What’s her name?”
“Inoue Mao” Yamapi said
Jun didn’t know what happen but he just stop walking after hearing ‘Inoue Mao’. They’ve arrived in the cafeteria. It’s quite crowded. Finally they found who they’ve been looking for. Yamapi who is in front of him tap the shoulder of the girl who was sitting at one of the table. The girl look at them then stands “PI-CHAN!!” she exclaim.
“Mao I want you to meet a new friend” Yamapi said pointing at Jun “Mao, this is Matsumoto Jun…Matsumoto Jun this is Inoue Mao…my Girlfriend.”
