Chapter 3
“Well then I’ll be a fool not to hire you.” Mao said with a smile that was graciously returned by Yamashita Tomohisa. “So I’m asking you this because I care” That didn’t came out correctly. Shoot! “I mean, I care but not that kind of care that is… Not what’s important right now,” Mao let out a nervous laugh. “Are you sure you want this job?” Mao looked at a amused Yamashita Tomohisa, obviously trying to suppress laughter. Yamashita Tomohisa was about to open his mouth when Mao stopped him.
“You know what? That question is totally unprofessional and unnecessary. Don’t answer it, congratulations Yamashita-san you’re hired.” What in the world is happening to me?
Mao forced her self to stand from her chair, stretch her right hand for a handshake, all this action vivid in her brain but like the tea incident Mao never imagine everything else that was about to happen next to happen. When Yamashita Tomohisa touched his hands with her she felt it. The sparks she only read about in books, the fireworks she only see in romantic comedy movies, the overwhelming feeling of happiness that she though she felt before with Jun but it’s now obvious she never had. And for the real first time she doesn’t want to let go, let go of the hand, let go of this feeling.
Mao looked at Yamashita Tomohisa’s eyes in searching. Did he felt the same thing? Mao asked herself desperately, yes ‘desperately’ because right now she is desperate for him to feel the same feelings she’s currently feeling, see the same things she’s currently seeing.
“So are we ready for lunch?” Hands still clasped together Yamashita Tomohisa asked.
“Um… it’s just 10, don’t you think it’s too early for lunch?” Mao pulled her hand even though her body said no. She smoothed her dress, looked at everything else except for the guy in front of her.
“Brunch then?”
“Ha! You asked me for lunch, I can’t just cancel everything I have this morning for you” Mao laughed. Yamashita Tomohisa pouted equipped with a ‘puppy dog eyes’
“Ha! For future references I’m not the kind of boss who falls for that tactic, the puppy dog eye doesn’t work for me.”
“Are you sure?”
“Becky’s been doing it since college, never worked, not once.”
“Oh that’s just sad, I’m so good at it”
“I can see that, you look so cute with that pout.”
“You think so?”
What did I just say? Mao starred at Yamashita Tomohisa. What are you doing? Are you flirting with him?
“You know I have a feeling Becky is dying to know the verdict about you! Lets announce the good news.” Real smooth Mao, good job your thisclose to humiliation.
-O-
“I really like your dress.” Yamashita Tomohisa complimented while they walked through the door of Mao’s office.
“Oh really?” Mao shrugged while giving her best ‘nonchalant smile’. “Thanks, I was in a hurry this morning I just pulled on the first thing I see in my closet and wore it.” Just act cool. The ‘nonchalant smile’ is not working causing for a nervous/giddy laugh to escape.
“Really Mao? I thought you bought that dress the other day for today’s date?” Becky looked up from the computer when she heard the click of the door when it opened.
“No Becky that’s a different dress, not this one.” Mao answered through her smile.
“Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s the dress.”
“No it’s not Becky.”
“Are you sure? I mean I was with you that day.”
“Rebecca it’s not!” Mao almost shouted.
“Oh Mr. Yamashita, don’t you think Mao look stunning with her hair curled?” Rebecca ignored Mao and focused on Yamashita Tomohisa instead. At this moment, Mao’s just waiting for the floor to open up eating her alive.
“Um…” Yamashita Tomohisa answered obviously uncomfortable and confuse of what’s happening.
“Becky, Yamashita-san here is hired isn’t that an amazing news?”
“Yamashita-san huh? So that’s what you’re calling him now?” Rebecca.
“Yamashita-san, you know what brunch sounds nice,” Mao said to Yamashita Tomohisa exasperated. “Becky moved everything I have this morning later this day, let me just get my bag and coat and we’re out of here.”
Yamashita Tomohisa watched Mao walk back to her office the looked back at the grinning Becky.
“Puppy eyes does not work but since college I found out that an agitated Mao will give me what I want, works all the time.” Yamashita Tomohisa starred at Becky still confuse.
“I might have left the intercom in her office on while the interview is happening, that might have happened.” Becky Shrugged.
“Will I be witnessing something like this everyday between the two of you?” Yamashita Tomohisa asked curious.
“Um… No? No I don’t think it happens everyday?” Becky taps her chin, deep in thoughts. “Oh wait yeah? No? Lets just go with ‘No’, Oh but do know when the new desk arrives I will be using it.”
-O-
At a normal day Mao will consider this day a miracle, when the elevator doesn’t have to stop at every floor in the building but today’s different. The only day she wanted for it to happen it never happened. The entire elevator ride was quiet, and even though it didn’t stop to other floors it felt like forever for the both of them till it reach main floor.
“Well that was awkward.” Yamashita Tomohisa said when the elevator doors opened. Mao gave him an apologetic smile while continues walking leaving Yamashita Tomohisa behind.
“Mao chotto!” Yamashita Tomohisa shouted getting most of the people’s attention. Mao stopped walking now blushing like crazy.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to-” Yamashita Tomohisa started while catching up with Mao but was cut short.
“It’s fine, don’t worry.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I said its fine really.” This time Mao made eye contact and smiled.
“For calling you Mao.” He scratches the back of his neck while looking at his shoes. He looks like a kid whose being force to apologize. Cute. Is he blushing?
“Oh… it’s fine Tomohisa-kun?”
“Tomo, Tomohisa-kun whatever your comfortable with.” Yamashita Tomohisa said with a smile. No don’t smile. Ugh! I feel warm.
“I’m sorry,” He looked at Mao confused. Mao saw the confusion in his eyes and continued. “For the way I’ve been acting.” Mao looked hopeful. To be honest she like him… a lot.
“It’s fine.”
“But-”
“I said its fine really” Yamashita Tomohisa imitated Mao and failed miserably. They both laugh at how silly and childish they are right now but Mao needed this, she wanted this. Mao you want him as a friend thats all. Right?
“Now we’re about to have brunch together can we move past the awkwardness? I think were past it anyways after the first interview.” He gave her a smile coupled with a wink.
Mao laughed. “Whoa! Mister it’s the first date awkwardness is essential.”
“So it is a date?” Really Mao? Just when the two of your are starting to get comfortable with each other you open your mouth and say something like that. Get a hold of yourself. “You don’t have to answer, it looks like you’re having a hard time thinking of an answer anyways.” Yamashita Tomohisa continued laughing.
“I do not!” Mao defended. She wanted to look offended but just can’t control the smile on her lips.
“Mao?” A familiar voice called out. Oh God no! Mao turned around to confirm her suspicion.
“Jun? What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to apologize and talk,” Jun glared at Yamashita Tomohisa. “You’re not answering my calls and emails.” You broke my heart I’m not talking to you, at least not yet. “Who is he? Becky mentioned a new man in your life is that him? Is he your boyfriend?”
Mao looked at the innocent Yamashita Tomohisa behind her. Apologize to him through her eyes for dragging him into this without him even knowing. Shoot! Becky why do you have to say I have a new boyfriend! Becky don’t sleep tonight I’m going to kill you!
“Um…” Mao started. But before Mao could come up with an answer she felt an arm wrap in her waist. She wanted to react, to pull away end this madness but again Yamashita Tomohisa beat her up to it. She heard it loud and clear he said “Hai!”.
“Is it true Mao?” Jun looked at her hurt visible in his eyes. She actually felt sorry but remembered she probably looked the same when she found out he eloped with her neighbor. The only difference is he is not there to say ‘yes’ straight to her face instead she received a letter and a text message which just adds to the pain. She told herself she’s not going to let that happen again, so she placed her palm on Yamashita Tomohisa’s chest and says loud and clear for everyone in the lobby to hear. “Yes Jun, he’s my new boyfriend.”
Gasp. Gasps everywhere, the only thing Mao could hear from everybody while they stop to a deafening silence.
