I'm stunned that the Republicans have half decent enthusiasm ratings. I thought the American people were smarter than that. I always thought, well, there is always a brain-damaged fringe, but if we can prevent them from committing acts of terror, the country will generally get better. However, Obama was not able to completely repair in 18 months ( Read more... )

I'm not overly impressed with Democrats' record of caring that the American public be smarter than a three-legged dog, either, but at least it's fairly described as unusual, when they actively try to make the public stupider.

Glenn Beck's ratings would suggest, it's worked in at least a few million cases.

Ergo, why I refuse to apologize for my unhesitating elitism. I see no merit at all, in voting for someone who is only as smart as I am.

If I never voted for a candidate who was no smarter than I am, I don't think I would have cast many votes, and neither would you if you really believed that. The primary attribute for politicians tends to be CHA, not INT. If I have to, I'll do a whole post on why it's still worth voting _against_ a right-wing extremist who is absolutely, unequivocally, openly, not on America's side in any way.

Am I going to have to do another post on false equivalencies and why an insufficiently-impressive "record of caring that the American public be smarter than a three-legged dog" is not the same as the consistent Republican tendency to "actively try to make the public stupider" too? You know better and you know that I know you know better.

Ooh, looking at it, sorry to sound so harsh.

In a nutshell, yes, people are that stupid.

Angry, close-minded, fearful, and/or reality-averse people are almost indistinguishable from stupid people. When both conditions exist, you get Michelle Bachmann, R-Denial.

I think that it's reassuring that the president is beginning to beat the drum of GOP obstructionism, to point out that, "I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE, FUCKBAGS; let's see what the electorate thinks of your bullshit now."

[I am here almost completely at random; I just noticed there is a "who has visited your lj lately?" toy, and was curious about unfamiliar-to-me names of my guests.]

I think I liked your answer to the fortune cookie question. Very witty, as I recall. Love the Bachman joke too. Can I use that?

I wish Obama would say that, exactly as you said. It would be entirely warranted and then some, but he is in a bit of a catch-22. He needs to get angry but if he does, he'll be playing into the hands of right-wingers who want to paint him as an "angry Black man."
Meanwhile, his white supporters (I include myself here) have, I think, gotten excessively mad at him for not getting angry, and for compromising, and... and actually, that warrants another post. I'll write it next weekend. Can't type on this machine.
