Finally getting my 2012 Yuletide letter up!
Peter Pan & Related Fandoms
I am leaving the character section clear because I pretty much love any kind of Peter Pan story. (I request it every year lol.) Usually I've requested something with Peter and/or Wendy in the past, but last year I wrote and also received George Darling fic which turned out to be really fun!
I have a soft spot for this story not only because I think the plot is great but I have a Master's in Children's Literature and, having studied the story, find the ideas of adulthood, childhood, and nostalgia that the story discusses just fascinating. I'm also a huge fan of the authorized (novel) sequel Peter Pan in Scarlet (y Geraldine McCaughrean), the novel retelling Tigerheart (by Peter David), and the movie Hook.
As mentioned above, I love stories that deal with the concepts of adulthood (someone thinking about Growing Up), childhood (wanting to stay young, reminiscing on the past, etc), and nostalgia (the love of something that seems better than it actually was). Any character(s) is/are fine. However, I really don't like Hook/Peter or Hook/Wendy. I'm actually not a fan of ships here in general unless canon (George/Mary Darling) or the semi-unrequited canon (Wendy-->Peter, Tinker Bell-->Peter).
I won't say no to angst as there's always a certain amount of that when Growing Up in general, but, you know, no massacres please. ;) Prequels, sequels, something tying Barrie's original to any of the retelling/spin-off universes would be awesome. It's Peter Pan. I'll probably love it no matter what. ;)
Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms
Just as in my Peter Pan paragraph, I didn't choose any fairy tale characters specifically here for you to write about mainly because I pretty much love all fairy tales. They are my bread and butter. :D My favorites are Rapunzel, The Frog Prince, and Rumpelstiltskin, if I had to choose, though. My absolute favorite thing about fairy tales are how so many people are able to come up with so many different types of retellings and combinations of fairy tales.
Retellings: Because fairy tales are (mostly) all about true love and happy endings, I love that the essential plots and characters can be taken and put in almost any time and place to create something that is recognizable but still its own unique story. By combinations, I essentially mean the same thing, but this is when they combine two or more fairy tales to create one cohesive story.
I had a lot of fun writing a fairy tale combination/retelling last year, so it would be neat to get someone else's take on this. (While I'm more familiar with Grimms' tales, feel free to include any you want--Andersen, Wilde, etc.) Have fun!
Fly By Night Series - Frances Hardinge
Mosca Mye, Eponymous Clent
I absolutely love Hardinge's ability to world-build in her books, especially in Fly By Night (and Fly Trap, if you've read it) with the guilds, governments, and who was born under whose name, and so on and so on. I love it when authors include just enough extra information in their narratives to give it some flavor while assuming the reader is smart enough to fill in the gaps so as not to over-saturate the story. (Exposition is fine; exposition vomit, not so much. You get the picture.)
One of the things that struck me in Fly By Night was the end when Mosca was imagining what her life would be like if she stayed in town and got her "happy ending." Perhaps, dear author, you'd like to write an AU where that happens? Mosca does not imagine she'd be happy--is she correct? (Probably but--) What happens? You don't have to include Eponymous Clent in that type of story, though I imagine it'd be hard not to.
Other ideas: a fun little adventure story featuring Mosca and Clent--anything can happen when the two of them are together so you can pretty much have fun with that. (Since I've read the sequel, feel free to have it take place after Fly Trap if you like, or between the two books if you have not.) :D But don't be afraid to write about other characters! I find myself somewhat fascinated by Linden Kohlrabi and Hopewood Pertellis so something with one of them would not go unappreciated. ;)
But seriously. If you've offered to write this fandom, then you obviously love Reading and Words as much as I do, so I know I'll like whatever you write. :D
***
I've put everything I want/don't want into my original request and optional details are optional, but I'd prefer not to have any angst unless it's just a little bit (just not an entire "Oh the Angst! Oh the Drama!"-type of story, please.) Um...I guess that's it!
