So my spring break pretty much rocks. I've slept quite a bit, been mildly productive, gone to an all-day Shakespeare workshop, been to the Chicago Lyric Opera for a student matinee (for students, not by students) of Die Fledermaus, been to the art institute, been to a sports bar with my big brother, gone to Madison to see my grandparents, gone to ( Read more... )

Die Fledermaus...which is by Strauss (Johann II, not Richard), right? I haven't seen it myself, but I know the overture. How'd you like it, Hannah?

You're the FIRST person who's heard me talk about that opera and known who the composer is. People guess, but they're never right. Except you. Anyways...I liked it a lot. It's pretty funny, and the songs are catchy. It's the first opera I've been to, it was a LOT longer than I thought it would be (three and a half hour, including intermissions,) but I really liked it. They did it all in German, but they had a screen on top where they projected the english translation of the words. There was some dialogue as well as some singing, which made it a little easier to follow. So yeah...enjoyable experience overall, and pretty sweet.

MAD kudos for knowing the composer.

Yeah, well, I had the advantage in this case of being an opera buff.

Good to hear you enjoyed it...and that they were using English supertitles...or surtitles (or whatever they're called) instead of an English language translation (translations just don't sound right, and you still can't understand most of the words, anyway).

Die Fledermaus is actually an operetta rather than an opera. Operas actually have no dialogue - only singing - whereas operettas are kind of midway between musicals and operas. Also, I know the composer, too. But I'm living in Vienna where there's a gold statue of him in the city park. If I didn't know, then I think people here might laugh at me. :) I've seen other operas so far during my time here, but I really should see that somehow or other before leaving. I'm glad you liked it! I *love* opera.
