i pretty much only drink a single alcoholic drink on any one day (though on most days); and i mainly only drink red wine, so i'm very much into the "red wine is good for you" theory. it could be an age thing, though: at uni, and just before, a lot of people i knew were drinking to get drunk.

then again, it could be that i'm british and things are different over here: certainly drinking alcohol seems to be a far bigger deal in the US than over here - i've heard US people get very agitated about anyone drinking even small amounts of alcohol, which pretty much doesn't happen here. of course, i come from a family who all drink alcohol fairly regularly, so perhaps i get a slanted view of it. but i really don't think it's seen as the demon over here that surprising amounts of people in the US seem to see it as.

I'm very much a glass of wine with dinner and beer with pizza person. I love the feeling of relaxation that one drink can bring but hate the feeling of losing control if I drink more than that. Of course the wine has to be pretty cheap, so I hardly consider myself to be fully appreciative of the taste. Most of my college-age friends are like this too, so unless we're just really unique I suppose there probably is a sizeable group of young social drinkers out there. I imagine they wouldn't account for very much of the liquor sales though. I agree that what we're missing in our society is the idea of light to moderate drinking as being a healthy thing, both physically and psychologically. There have been many prohibition movements led by various denominations in US history, and that probably is the root of our modern attitudes toward alcohol ( ... )
