spinning off the tarot bit...

But lacking tarot cards, as I don't know much about them and think plain old backstory is just as fun. Also this way people have an idea where I'm coming from when I get around to angling for RP.

(To paraphrase Maskerade, magic and music are similar enough on the Disc that you can't really do both. Canon covers the music bit rather handily, in this particular case; go read Soul Music if you're curious.)

Imp y Celyn's mother died when he was ten; when his father did not remarry after the accepted mourning period, the disapproving whispers started. General feeling in Llamedos had long held that raising a child without a mother and a father Would Not Do, and it didn't seem to matter that Imp was old enough to remember his mother quite well.

When he was thirteen, a wizard came through the area. Llamedos general feeling had never held with magic, either - too easy, next to organizing proper standing stones - so the poor man had a hard time finding anyone to talk to.

Imp, having never seen anything like it before, was fascinated. Visitors were a rare thing, whether they knew magic or not. And it wasn't as though people were going to stop talking any time soon, so he talked to the visitor as much as he could that week.

The wizard said later that he almost hadn't asked Imp's father about the possibility of schooling. Opening up that sort of dichotomy tends not to end well. But at the same time, something had to be done to keep Imp's potential from going to waste, especially since no one knew about said potential before then.

Imp wasn't sure what to think when his father said yes, other than that the disapproving gossip was really going to pick up. But he settled into Ankh-Morpork and the academic life quickly enough (for one thing, it didn't constantly smell of wet sheep), especially when the High Energy Magic Building opened. He's been there for a bit over five years now, and doesn't go back to Llamedos often; mostly he's too busy, and he doesn't really have a place there anymore.

(In terms of canon events: I think he was in Ankh-Morpork in time for Moving Pictures, which mostly means he knows some of Victor's perpetual-student prowess. Reaper Man stuff, he mostly boggled at and didn't really get caught up in, and... I have yet to decide if an equivalent to Soul Music is going to happen.)
