Preface

The heavy fog hung low around the bank of the river surrounded by heavy overgrown and unkempt trees. The silence was eerie even to the smallest of creatures that crawled over the cool moist ground. The rabbit that had been inspecting the low hanging branches of a small tree jumped when a loud pop sounded in the distance immediately followed by a louder crack.
“You should have let me handle it! I am not incapable. I am tired of you trying to take the credit for everything.... you are...”
“I suggest you not finish that sentence and remember whom it is that you are speaking to. Had I not finished what you were incapable of finishing, you would be dead right now”, snarled Snape.
“Or you would be”, Draco suggested with distaste.
“What are you suggesting Draco? That you were going to kill me next? Let me remind you that the Dark Lord is not going to be so forgiving for this little mistake of yours. I saved your life” snarled Snape as he pushed Draco up against the nearest tree.
“Please, you didn’t do it to save my life, you did it to steal my glory! You filthy low-life git. You think that I don’t know what you're up to? Trying to become the Dark Lord’s most valuable servant. Well you’ll never achieve the rank my father has,” sneered Draco as he flung Snape out of the way.
He pushed his way through the marsh and onto the path that led to a road. Snape came billowing past him, pulled his wand out, and turned towards Draco with a fearful expression. “When will you realize that your father can not get you out of this one Draco? You had Dumbledore cornered. Why didn’t you kill him ?” asked Snape.

“I don’t know. I don’t know why. I was getting ready to kill him when all the other Death Eaters came running up the stairs. I was scared ok? There! Now you’ve heard me say it. What more do you want? He’s going to kill me! He's going to kill me and I don’t want to die,” Draco cried falling onto his knees. He pounded the ground with his fists screaming in agony. “I don’t want to die!”

“Then you should have killed Albus Dumbledore like I asked you to Draco.”

Draco sat up and looked around for him. Where was he? Tears falling silently down his face as his eyes quickly searched the dark shadows all around him. His heart began beating so rapidly that he knew Snape could hear it. He slowly stood up on his feet to face death like a man. He turned around slowly searching for the Dark Lord.

“On your knees boy! So, you are as weak as I expected you to be. What a shame. I did hope that you would prove me wrong. It would have been such a sweet taste to have Dumbledore defeated at that hands of one of his students. But you were not worthy of the task. Do you know what I do to people that fail me, Draco?

Draco fell to his knees and frantically searched the line of trees for a sign of where the Dark Lord was. His eyes darting back and forth, wand at the ready. He would not die without a fight. He would show them that he was not unworthy.

“What’s the matter Draco, didn’t your parents teach you any respect? I asked you a question. Do you know what I do to people that fail me, Draco? No? Well let me show you. CRUCIO,” shouted Voldemort. A jet of red light darted from the nearby trees and lifted Draco off the ground. His knees were tucked up under him at an awkward angle and his whole body was shaking with the intensity of the spell. He writhed and shrieked. Screaming more loudly than he ever had in his whole life. Voldemort lifted his wand and the screaming stopped.

“There, there Draco. Now tell me again why you didn’t kill Dumbledore?” the Dark Lord asked walking over to the pile that was Draco on the ground.

Draco lay there in agony. Daring to look up at Voldemort, “Dumbledore is dead, my Lord.”

“Yes, Draco he is. But did you kill him?” Voldemort hissed in his ear. “No, you did not. I gave you one task Draco. Just one. Kill Dumbledore. Maybe this will help you remember what happens to people that fail me.” He jerked his wand towards Draco, “CRUCIO” and the pain started over again. This time the shrieking and the screaming could surely be heard for miles. “Had enough yet? Yes. Yes . I am sure you think you have. You know what Draco? I am going to give you one more chance to redeem yourself.”
