Title: Waywardly Skyward

Summery: Nathan's on his way home from a long day of campaigning. He's the last to leave. Peter's in the alleyway looking up to the sky.

It seems lately, I know when he's coming, because I start to hover before he's announced himself.

"Hey Pete. ...Hey! Stop that."

He's so cautious, but at the same time cruel. I know it's out of love, but sometimes it hurts.

"Whoa," I dropped to the ground as he came closer.

"I'm sorry, Nathan. I didn't realize..." I lied. I love it when he's around. I love that feeling of being lifted off my feet, floating freely in his presence. I wish he'd accept his powers. I wish he'd just accept who he really is.

"Yeah, well, you need to. You need to be careful Pete. I'm not always going to be around to tell you that, you know? You need to get your head out of the clouds, man."

If only he'd just come up with me, join me up in the clouds one day. He doesn't understand how amazing this is. To him, it's a disease, a curse. To me, it's my destiny. My fate. We have these powers for a reason, and I wish I could make him understand.

"No, Nathan. You need to fly yours up there one day. If you'd only use it, you'd get it. You have this power for a reason. You can't deny yourself, who you are."

He laughed at me, that smug chuckle. I love it.

"Peter... I'm Nathan Petrelli. I'm running for Congress. I can't go around flying and saving cheerleaders, and neither can you."

He put his hand on my shoulder. I had to hold back, I had to force myself to stay grounded. But it's so hard...

"Nathan, we can't run from this. This is something. Something big. This is who we are. We need to accept it. We can help people. More than you could as a Congressman."

He took his arm down and just looked away. How can I get him to understand?

He picked his head back up and placed both hands on my shoulders. "Peter. You're the nurse. The saver. The hero. I'm just a man. ...A bad man, at that. And, I guess no matter how hard I try, I can't stop you, and I'm sorry I can't help you. This is my destiny. This is who I am. And, I can't run from this. I can't risk it. ...Think about what would happen if..."

I took his hands in mine and pulled them away from myself, holding them in between us. I looked him directly in his eyes.

"Heidi and the kids... That's why you won't? You won't risk it to save them, so you risk losing them instead? Don't you get it, Nathan? It's us who have to stop this. We're the ones. The police can't do anything. The army? No way. We're the army. We're the only ones who can do something, here. This is it. This is everything."

"Peter..." he said as he released his right hand and placed it on my cheek.

"Peter, you can think I'm a bastard, you can think I don't care about saving the world. You can think whatever you want. But..."

I grabbed his right hand and caressed it while I put my right on his face.

"What, Nathan?"

"I don't want to lose you, Peter. I can't lose you. As hard as it would be for my kids and Heidi to lose me, it would be even harder for me to lose you. I've been trying to get you to stop; I've been trying to save you, Peter. And, if I can't save you, how can I save the world? How can I help if I can't even save my little brother?"

Now, I held his face with both hands.

"But, Nathan. You did save me, remember? You flew up and caught me. You saved me. If anyone can, it's you. Hell, I'm doing this for you, Nathan. I can't lose you, either. I need to save the world in order to save you. But, the thing is... I can't do it alone."

"Peter..."

A tear escaped his eye and he reached up to rub it away. I stopped his hand and held him close as more began trailing down his face.

"We can do it, Nathan. We can stop this."

He embraced me closer and said, "I know we can, Pete. I know we can..."

And before he finished his sentence, we were already in the air.

"Let's save the world, little brother."
