on second thought, not to be rude but what u said to him is probably the last thing on his mind right now...so i wouldnt really worry about what u said....right now just try to be there for your friend.
it's not rude to say so. It's not that I'm worried that he'd be mad at me or something (he said that we would hang out next week) but it's me saying that things will be ok and it didn't turn out that way. Grant it, I'm not a prophet...

it really depends, in most occasions, false hope is better than no hope.
and sometimes, words are not necessary at all, just an ear to listen.
