More Top Ten Anime Episodes of All Time!

+1, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry!

Also, this is by far and away my favorite episode of the series. It says so much while still demonstrating restraint, and the elevator scene is a beautiful example of this. It's a painful and beautiful character study, and a hard 22 minutes to witness particularly to an Asuka sympathizer like myself.

In a weird way -- well, in a lot of weird ways -- I always felt as if I understood Eva perfectly. Even when I didn't understand what was going on, in a plot of mechanical sense, I always understood the feelings and undercurrents, and most especially, the people.

I've always been a Shinji defender -- I was unable to ever get into the fandom because I react badly and aggressively towards people who diss on Shinji, because I felt like from the first moment of the series until the end I could understand him. I always understood exactly what he was feeling, and it broke my heart.

Weirdly enough, to a certain extent I felt the same was about Asuka -- I always understood her -- but instead of causing me to love her, it caused me to loathe her. I can't really explain or apologize for that. I guess if there's a message to this episode at all, it's that pitying someone is not the same as loving them.
