Oooh! Livejournal isn't blocked anymore? How nice! Now I'd be even happier if they didn't start blocking Youtube instead. :\

I haven't been very active on the Naruto front recently, sorry. I just found the Pain arc and such so slow and boring. >_So what have I been doing? Actually last year I had started writing a book on manga story-telling. The ( Read more... )

China web censorship. :P

It's more of an annoyance than anything else, and I could still access LJ by proxy, but then that makes it slow and annoying as hell. And I don't even want to Think about watching Youtube clips through a proxy. >_>

OMG! IT'S BEEN SO LONG!! *huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuug*

Ok, now I know you've been gone so long (if you didn't recognize, it's me Tifaeria on NF :D). And I love those writing exercises. The exercise where they tell you to write everyday, doesn't matter what it is as long as you write a page, is a pretty good one. You can even write gibberish, as long as you keep writing. I keep wanting to write but things keep taking my attention away from them. Like one tells me to write about them and right when I'm in the groove of writing it, another idea pops in my head and says "NO! WHAT ABOUT ME?!" And then I just end up not writing but reading about what I want to write about. @_@ I am a big history buff so when I read about the background of my intended plot, I naturally get carried away. I don't like that even though I enjoy it.

Anyways, welcome back! ♥♥♥

That idea you wrote about Divorcee women, it reminds me of that movie The First Wives Club. That was a good movie. You should read the book for inspiration if you have it over there ( ... )

Welcome back to LJ, Miz! :D It's been ages since you last posted.

Good to see you're still pumping out amazing essays. ^_^ Reading the comments, I wholeheartedly agree with the manga writer phenomenon, where mangakas just seem to copy formulae from other mangas. It's always a terrible pity when an interesting premise just degenerates into another endless sequence of battles.

World discovery! That is so hugely important! There is this one RPG game I hold close to my heart, called Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast/Gamecube). It had such a beautiful, brilliant, feeling of discovery right at the heart of it, with vibrant and imaginative lands (as well as a great plot). It is indeed a pity that many mangakas don't seem to pay a great deal of attention to it. Kishimoto, for example, does show variety when it comes to the different ninja countries, but there's not much time spent on... soaking up the atmosphere, seeing the details ( ... )

This sounds fascinating. I'm always up for reading others' thoughts on story-telling, be it prose or comics/manga. From your outline it looks more like a general "how to come up with different/marketable stories" guide than anything intrinsically tied to manga. Are you going to address decompression and working within a long-form serial format?

Yeah, the "ideas" spin-off is actually more general, the manga-focused one will then refer to it ( ... )

Your mentioning of some of the lack of diversity and creativity in current manga makes me wonder if there's been a widespread editorial policy or a change in general manga readership preferences. I'm not as well-versed in the broader spectrum of manga, so I'm not sure if it's a medium-wide issue, or perhaps limited to certain genres.

Also, considering the breadth of my knowledge regarding the manga publishing process is from a few interviews with various mangaka and Bakuman, I'm curious how applicable any advice or guidelines can be if weekly/monthly poll numbers and editorial mandates play a larger role in the creative process in manga than other forms of story-telling. Are you going to be referring to any "insider knowledge" like mangaka interviews, manga instruction courses, etc for your analysis or will this purely your observations?

Oooh, I'm pretty sure there Is. Editors are just as guilty of the genre lock-in as the mangakas are. The book is also targetted at them, so that even if they don't do the creative stuff themselves, they can be in a better position to guide the creation process, by pointing out what's missing etc, and Hopefully realize that it's a good idea to develop new markets. It can be accomplished in increments though ( ... )

Dont know if your an active Naruto manga reader, but I thought your NaruSaku manifesto was spot on. If your up on the current events of Naruto then you probably know that there were quite a few emotional parts recently. Do you think you will ever update the manifesto as the story develops?

Yup, still reading it. ^^ And yes, I've enjoyed the past NaruSaku moments. I have no plans on updating the manifesto though, it took Quite long to do, and besides, it's fun to compare to see whether I got things right or not. :D
