If he's stopped gaping, I wouldn't worry about it. Is he acting normal now? He's a pretty boy; we have a few L. getulus floridana (Brooks Kingsnake) in our collection, and they're by far some of the biggest personalities in the crew. :) Glad the first steps are going well.
Hubby likes our new crawly-baby. He just wasn't prepared for the speed. Every time he's handled Pixel, he's so chill and slow, so to see him in hunt mode surprised him. At least he doesn't roll his eyes now when I say, "You never know if he could bite, so don't scare him..."
how long was his mouth open? Sometimes my hognose will open her mouth for a bit after a meal. What are your temps? Do you have a thermometer in there? It's pretty hard to say if he overheated without any temps..
Maybe a minute? And his temps at the time and today are so: Cool side never gets more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It usually stays around 78/76 but if the cat moves the blinds in the office, it can get around 80 due to indirect sunlight. On the warm side it stays around 90 during the day, but I turn off the heat lamp at night to give him some darkness. I have 2 thermometers on the cool and warm side of his cage. His water bowl is in the middle and he has a hide on the warm side that he sleeps in at night and a hide on the cool side that he...ignores unless he's shedding...
I'm having issues figuring out the right size water dish. The one I had originally was for a baby snake, but I ended up getting an adult. I got a bigger one today but now I'm thinking it's too big. ah well. I'll figure it out.
yes, it Is pretty common for snakes to stretch ('reset') their jaws after a meal--sometimes you can see them reach out with each half of the lower jaw--other times, its more like a yawn... it normally does not last very long though-
if it had lasted more than a minute or so, I might have checked for substrate in the mouth, too ---Might he have grabbed the tongs ,and had a bit of a sore mouth from that?
LOL nah, it was nothing but meat when he was eating. Like I said, he sort of rose up on the last 6 inches of his body to get it before I could give it to him. It did only last for about a minute and he hasn't been gaping at all that I've seen since then.
I'm too used to mammals, I think. If I see an animal that looks like it's yawning or panting, I think it's trying to cool down.
