Corn Snake

Nov 20, 2012 01:13

I just got a new corn snake as a class pet. Right now it's a baby and is in a 20 gallon tank. I bought two clips from petco to secure the mesh lid, but it seems anything BUT secure. All I can envision is it escaping and me getting fired. What can I do to secure the lid?

Are they the circular shaped clips? I hate those things. They're useless.

I like these: http://www.petco.com/product/4353/Petco-Reptile-Screen-Cover-Security-Clips.aspx
If you need to, buy 2 sets. Should secure the lid very well.

I have those actually but one set. They jiggle. Maybe I'm just paranoid!!

It could be that the small pieces that fit under the tank rim are pushed in too far. Try pulling them out a bit before you hook the larger pieces on for a tighter fit.

I think I installed them wrong... the small part goes under the tank rim? Trying to visualize

If they're the round topped springy kind, you're better off using gorilla tape to keep that mesh top on! Corns are notorious escape artists, and I can't for the life of me understand why Four Paws brand discontinued their very secure but inexpensive clips (like these: http://di1-3.shoppingshadow.com/images/pi/77/51/2f/96125793-260x260-0-0_Four+Paws+Four+Paws+Tank+Top+Metal+Screen+Clips+la.jpg ) in favor of the springs that allow escapes far too easily for my tastes ( ... )

Can I get a secure locking lid for my existing cage?

I have the ones the person suggested above. The kind of look like binder clips. Maybe I didn't do it right

Looks like you got that squared away and tightened the petco ones? Otherwise, as puzzelo said, put a brick on it. :)

When I had babies in 20-gallons I also felt that the lids were not secure enough even with clips. So I got some of that stick-on foam tape which one uses to insulate window closures, don't know what it's called, and stuck that on the back and sides of the tank. I don't know if it was actually necessary, but it filled the space between the sides of the tank and the sides of the lid, and they never escaped. If your lid isn't actually loose, though, this may not be a problem. But yeah, 4 of the better cage-clips always worked for me.

I'm going to have to remember that trick. Brilliant. :)
