questions about this live journal thing-

Jun 30, 2008 11:50

Greetings friends.  I am relatively new to this live journal thing.  I recognize that my rants are sometimes long and some of you may not want to read long stuff.  So how do I put links to longer rants into my posts (or does that require a pay account) and what the %$#!@ does Meme stand for?

well the lj cut thing is easy. When you type a post near the top of the box you should see "rich text" button. When you click on that you should see some icons come up. In the middle is the button for a cut. (I think it is next to the cd icon) As for long post, quite frankly if they are that long I just don't bother reading them.

Meme:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme

A meme (pronounced /miːm/)[1] consists of any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that gets transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. Memes propagate themselves and can move through a "culture" in a manner similar to the behavior of a virus. As a unit of cultural evolution, a meme in some ways resembles a gene. Richard Dawkins, in his book The Selfish Gene,[2] recounts how and why he coined the term meme to describe how one might extend Darwinian principles to explain the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. He gave as examples tunes, catch-phrases, beliefs, clothing-fashions, and the technology of building arches.

OK - But this Meme thing is usualy a mini-quiz that people pass around like "Which Jane Austin Boyfriend Do You Have?" or "If you were a Dunkin Donut, what flavor would you be?". OK - I made up the last one, which does not negate it's essential plausibility, I just don't know how to create a Meme. I just know that I am a Honey Dipped Cruller - Comments?

Don't know how. That's the next post. Let start it out in the open so more people will see it!

Thanks for asking the question. I needed to know the answer too! I skim long posts or only click into the ones that peak my interest but I say - lj is for you - first and foremost - so say what you've got to say, brother! Then if you strike a nerve, some one will pipe up. If not, people probably read it and agree with you but don't feel the need to comment.

I tend to type stuff not so much for me but for the "water cooler" kinda response because my office is small and very few people have the same sense of Humor, cynicism, optimism or quirky outlook that I do. I love the "Loitering" story. If you had not lj'ed it, I might never have heard it!

I agree. I love your long rants/posts/whatever. You are welcome to tuck them away behind LJ cuts, but I *WILL* click them to read what you have to write. I need a smile or two every day, and you have a particular knack for composing articles worthy of such.

But here is more about how to do a LJ-cut:
