2013 film and television

Dec 19, 2013 12:47

Because I'm still waiting for some benevolent deity of writing to reach down and fix my Yuletide story, I'm adapting some meme questionnaires to track my media consumption this year.

Best movie experiences in 2013

Gravity -- GOOD GOD ALFONSO
12 Years a Slave -- fuck my life and fuck everything, but shit it was amazing
Fruitvale Station -- I haven't heard that many people sniffling in a theater since Titanic
Rush -- I did not expect that much awesomeness, being not really a fan of Ron Howard or Formula 1, but it was fantastic
Before Midnight -- I hope they're still making these movies when they're all eighty years old
The Heat -- Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in a buddy cop comedy = TAKE MY MONEY
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire -- continues to be all I want/need out of these adaptations
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug -- I think the key to my enjoyment was rewatching all of LOTR beforehand so I reacquainted myself with PJ's fanfic-to-film tendencies, but NOT rereading the book
Pacific Rim -- I declined to watch this in the cinema but then checked it out for Mako Mori, who I now hope to see in many sequels
White House Down -- don't judge me
Thor: The Dark World -- the movie which finally set off a blazing but thankfully brief crush on Tom Hiddleston
Watching/rewatching a crapload of Gene Kelly musicals because reasons
Watching/rewatching all of the Fast & Furious movies because reasons

Movie experiences I didn't hate in 2013

The Bling Ring
Don Jon
The Host -- I was on a plane, don't judge me!
Iron Man 3
Man of Steel
Star Trek Into Darkness
This is the End
Warm Bodies
Wolverine
World War Z
The World's End

Movies I'm still looking forward to in 2013 but which will likely spill over into 2014

American Hustle
Her
Wolf of Wall Street
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
August: Osage County
(read: I remain a sucker for awards bait)

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2013?

My Mad Fat Diary -- my new favorite everything
House of Cards -- the US version with Kevin Spacey; really impressively done
Vikings -- SO HOT
Hannibal -- same
Sleepy Hollow -- because everyone else was watching it
Orphan Black -- same
Agents of SHIELD -- same
The Originals -- finally admitting that I just need stupid teen vampire drama in my life
Reign -- fuck me, I don't know why
The Sopranos -- at long last
Star Trek: The Original Series -- at long last

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2013?

Downton Abbey -- you MOTHERFUCKERS
Homeland -- same
Dexter -- same
Scandal -- hot mess, dropped it like a hot potato
The Following -- same
Beauty & the Beast -- just got bored
Agents of SHIELD -- just not my thing

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2013? Why?

Almost Human -- I'm there in theory but haven't had time
Justified -- got derailed in S1 but meaning to go back
The Wire -- got derailed in S2 but meaning to go back

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2014?

The above three.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2013?

Orphan Black. I mean, I started watching it late, after everyone raved about it and ranted about Tatiana Maslany not getting nominated for awards and whatever. And it was entertaining and well-done in large part, but then large parts of it (both character and plot) really didn't work for me either. So overall I was underwhelmed after the hype. I'll be there for S2, though.

Downton Abbey. What even the fuck fucking fuck.

Elementary hasn't remained interesting despite actually doing many things I wanted it to, so we're now many episodes behind.

Sleepy Hollow had a pretty entertaining start, but I can't make myself pay attention to it. Also, they had Abbie in tears about Ichabod's possible death in that one episode way too soon. You have to build to that kind of emotional closeness!

The Following. I was really looking forward to this because the trailer looked great and I love Kevin Bacon, but it was just excruciating to watch. Quit after maybe six episodes, which was three too many.

Dexter. I actually tried the first few episodes of the last season, because it was the last, but I saw the writing on the wall and peaced out. By all accounts a good decision.

Homeland. I think technically I dropped this in 2012, but I meant to try the first few episodes of the latest season. But then I quit the drugs and said, nah.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2013?

Breaking Bad once again took years off my life and THAT is how you end a series.

My Mad Fat Diary made me laugh and squeal and cry a whole hurricane of tears, i's dotted with hearts and nostalgia for the 1990s.

House of Cards was strong and brilliant and gorgeous, from top to bottom.

Shows I kept up with in 2013 which maintained the same level of quality to which I was accustomed

Game of Thrones -- the Red Wedding reaction compilation video hahahah

Mad Men never surprises me anymore, but remains watchable for what it is.

Legend of Korra was as messy as usual, but at least it was pretty.

The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf remain as id-satisfying but as terrible as ever.

Shows I rewatched during 2013

Veronica Mars -- forgot what a slog S3 is, but we finally made it and I'm ready for whatever the movie chooses to be.

Star Trek: The Next Generation -- keep starting and stopping, at the moment bogged down somewhere in S4 or S5, but rewatching Star Trek is like a lifelong project.

The X-Files -- some reactions in my last post.
