Happy New Year, everyone!
I think I've done this adapted year-end meme about movies and TV for a couple of years now. It's not necessarily stuff that got released or aired in 2014, just what I watched (and can recall right now).
Best movie experiences in 2014
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) -- made me cry on a plane, and there will be a sequel in March!
Cairo Time (2009) -- Alexander Siddig in a romantic role, hnnnngggg
Captain America: The Winter Soldier -- solid installment
Don Jon (2013) -- ScarJo stole everything
Edge of Tomorrow -- so entertaining on multiple levels
Gone Girl -- I read the book and was still blown away by the movie execution
Guardians of the Galaxy -- Bright Abbott making me proud!
Her (2013) -- gorgeous vision of the future, but omg THAT SCENE was so awkward
The LEGO Movie -- fun and delightful
Lust, Caution (2007) -- fffffuuuuuuck
Let the Right One In (2008) -- our Halloween pick, not scary but rather oddly adorable
Veronica Mars -- aww, nostalgia
Movie experiences I didn't hate in 2014
American Hustle (2013) -- how did Amy Adams and JLaw get paid less than the guys for this?? (don't answer that)
Big Hero 6 -- wanted to love more, found it fairly ordinary
The Butler (2013) -- sniff!
Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012) -- chose from Netflix b/c in mood for happy rom-com >:(
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes -- not as rewatchable as the prequel
Galaxy Quest (1999)
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies -- redeemed by the freaking blatant Bilbo/Thorin, GOD ALMIGHTY
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 -- sadly just boring
Interstellar -- I actually did kind of hate this, but redeemed by special effects
Maleficent -- Angelina Jolie's face deserved better
X-Men: Days of Future Past
What If (2013) -- Daniel Radcliffe in a rom-com set in hipsterville, Toronto...not bad with the pining, DanRad
Whip It (2009)
Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Movies I'm still looking forward to in 2014 but which will likely spill over into 2015
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
Inherent Vice
The Theory of Everything
Unbroken
(aka I remain a sucker for awards bait)
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2014?
The 100 -- here for everything this show wants to give me at this point
Finding Carter -- liked the premise and needed another teen show, bit sloppy tho
Orange is the New Black -- new favorite female supporting characters, basically ALL of them
True Detective -- very impressive, but not that excited about next season
Which TV shows did you let go of in 2014?
Elementary -- IDEK why, just wasn't motivated to start new season; but I will come back!
Orphan Black -- fizzled out right before season finale as just found all the plot boring; will try to pick this up again
Reign -- was my exercise TV, then my exercise fell off
Sleepy Hollow -- never finished last season; heard some disgruntled rumblings about current season
Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2014? Why?
Jane the Virgin -- haven't had time
Justified -- got derailed in S1 but meaning to go back
The Wire -- got derailed in S2 but meaning to go back
Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2015?
The above three
Which TV show impressed you least in 2014?
The Sopranos -- while technically very impressive (sometimes), the viewing experience is really difficult due to rampant misogyny of the male characters, and I haaaate Tony, not even in a love-to-hate way a la Walter White
Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2014?
The 100 -- seriously, everything
House of Cards -- what a roller coaster
Legend of Korra -- hello that ending was EVERYTHING KORRASAMI ILU FOREVER TEARS CRyING AHHHHH
My Mad Fat Diary -- Rae, my baby, please be happy in S3
The Vampire Diaries -- this season has actually been kind of AWESOME; love Kai as new villain
Vikings -- Lagertha LOVE
Shows I kept up with in 2014 which maintained the same level of quality to which I was accustomed
Game of Thrones -- just give me Alexander Siddig already
Hannibal
Mad Men -- can't even remember what happened this season, par for the course
The Originals
Teen Wolf
Shows I rewatched during 2014
Farscape -- started a rewatch over the holidays; skipping judiciously through Season 1 but so far it's the same kooky wonderfulness I remember
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -- this genius show still holds up as damn progressive TV in 2014
