TV talk

Last night I found myself posting some fairly substantive fandom meta to Tumblr. Is this how it begins? I don't do much fandom meta these days, but occasionally I have stuff to unpack and it just felt more natural to do it in a space where I've been seeing more activity. But now I feel guilty, so I thought I'd bring that meta over here ( Read more... )

I'm enjoying JtV muchly, too. Somehow it balances the crazy nighttime soap elements with humor and some good characterization. I agree that they got Jane and Rafael together too quickly, and I'd add that it feels like they've tended to dismiss the darker elements of his character too quickly as well, which otherwise make him interesting. But seeing as it's a telenovela, I'm assuming they won't be together for long. And yes, Rogelio is awesome - he never fails to make me smile when he's on screen. The thing I like best, I think, is that Jane is a relatable heroine: she stands by her convictions, but she's not perfect or goody-goody.

I would LOVE it if Rafael actually were keeping some dark secrets, because yes, then he might actually be interesting. I hadn't really thought they'd break up -- so far they seem to be acting very mature about their problems (both external and internal to the relationship) which, unfortunately, I find really very boring. I mean, I normally loathe the Big Misunderstanding trope in romance, and yet, when given a perfectly nice couple who actually talk to each other and learn about each other properly, I'm all *zzzz*. Go figure, huh?

I do like Jane for the reasons you say, though. I enjoy her scenes with her mother and Rogelio best.

Thanks for pointing out the post about social media and fandom! I've recently been fascinated with this sort of thing!

The 100 writers seem pretty engaged with fandom, and I'm not sure that's a good thing (having been a TVD watcher for years...). Have you seen Shawna Benson's Tumblr lately? She turned anon asks off because of intense shippers, sigh.
