I've got The Art of Discworld, and I love it, but I don't love how Kidby portrays Carrot and Angua. Actually, I've not seen a lot of art that makes either of them look very attractive-which is odd, because Carrot is supposed to be handsome and Angua was good-looking enough to qualify for the Seamstress' Guild.

Discworld art, yay!

I have to thank you for requesting it. I've never done Discworld anything, though I'm awfully fond of the books. It was a fun project, and I finally got to properly protest Kidby's art.

You're the second person who's told me Carrot looks like the Carrot of their imagination. I think Kidby made our boy look like a thirty-five-year old UPS driver, not a handsome king-in-hiding. And Angua... was it just me or did she look sort of like a strung-out junkie? He made her sort of hollow-eyed and gaunt, in my opinion, not like an attractive young woman. I just... ugh! I don't think Kidby does women well. Though, he's pretty genius with the pencil.

And YES. Kidby's Carrot looks a bit too old, though I do like the wide-set, honest eyes. The more I look at it, the more I think Kidby was trying for the hard-working do-good copper look, which he achieved. It probably doesn't sit right because the Carrot in my imagination was more handsome! You're right about Angua. In the books she's such a dynamic and sharp character that it makes me wonder why she simply looks like a tired dullard (very unwolf-like!). Perhaps he was going for placid. I wonder if Kidby has just made everyone look more unattractive because Ankh Morpork is...well, Ankh Morpork!

I also think Kidby's greatest strength is exaggerated facial features. He can do craggy, weary, cunning, unamused, insane, but I don't think he can do good-looking--which explains Angua and Susan. Oh, man--Susan. I was probably as much disappointed in Susan as I was in Carrot. She happens to be my favorite character, and his Susan was NOTHING like my Susan.

I also agree with jabberwocky; the official rendition of Angua always looks a little stoned to me, so it's nice to see her a bit more on the ball. Points for remembering her collar, too, though I suspect a badge would be a bit bigger.

There. I just outed Kidby and myself. We utilize magical expanding collars in our art.
