“Why do we have to do this?”
“It’s polite.”
Netherlands whined inarticulately and stamped his foot as Canada struggled to do up his tie for him.
“But… Russia…”
“And my brother.”
“But-“
Canada gave up on the tie and moved up on his tippy-toes to silence Netherlands with a kiss. The European nation moved to wrap his arms around his boyfriend’s waist and deepen the kiss, but Canada slid under his arms and went back to straightening his own jacket in the mirror.
“Plus, I promised them we would go.”
“Without talking to me.” Netherlands flopped over onto the nearby bed, spread-eagled and watching Canada’s eyes in the mirror.
“You always say you want to go new places,” Canada reasoned. He finished the last button then turned around and matched Netherlands’ pout. “Plus, it’s my brother. You know my brother. Most of the time, he doesn’t even remember my name, now he’s inviting me to go double date with him. I can’t pass that up

“Are you sure this was a good idea?”
“For the last time, yes!” America looks around to see if anyone had noticed how loud he was being. Either the other diners didn’t notice or they were polite enough to say nothing. They were in a side room, waiting to be seated, and hopefully for Canada and Netherlands to arrive in the meantime.
America was beginning to have second thoughts about this whole “double date” thing. It had seemed like a good idea when he proposed it to his little brother at a summit, but Russia kept making those little passive-aggressive comments, and America got to second-guessing himself, and…
He was pacing. Why did Russia always make him pace?
“Matthew, and… Lukas,” he didn’t even put an effort into pronouncing the name, “should be here any moment.” America sighed heavily and sat down on the leather-upholstered bench next to Russia

The restaurant was not one that Canada would have picked. It was a big, hoity-toity, wannabe indeterminate European thing. He was struck by the sickeningly gratuitous amount of chandeliers as he and Netherlands stepped inside the dining room.
A tired, but cheerful woman led them-well, Netherlands, as Canada only seemed particularly invisible in front of his tall, exuberant boyfriend-to a table near the back of the dining room.
Canada tightened his grip on Netherlands’ hand as he caught sight of America and Russia sitting across from each other at one of the small square tables.
Netherlands knelt down and whispered in Canada’s ear, “Y’know, it’s not too late for you to catch pneumonia.”
Canada looked up at him questioningly.
He continued. “Or we could get caught in nightmarish traffic. Our cab could break down. They haven’t seen us, we could still just make up something and go home.”
Canada smiled. “Thanks,” he murmured. “But, we gotta see this through, now that we’ve agreed.”

America waited until after they had all finished ordering from the frazzled-looking waitress to begin the interrogation.
“So,” he addressed Netherlands, who was sipping a glass of water and smilng over at Canada in a way that America was almost certain he didn’t like. “How did you and Mattie get to know each other?”
“World War II,” Netherlands answered, putting down the glass and not looking away from Canada. “Matthew saved my life.”
“I hear you’re all going socialist over there,” America prodded. “One world government, and all that.”
“Alfred…” Canada whined.
“Actually, I prefer a fairly free-market economy.” Netherlands rolled his fork carelessly around the table.
America narrowed his eyes. He wasn’t getting off that easy. “Then what about the prostitution

Holy crap authornon, I never even *thought* of Netherlands/Canada before! They're so sweet together! And to think I'm missing out on something as potentially awesome as this. :D
Random!Anon would like to point out that she is absolutely adoring this fic! I love everything about it from protective!America being a downright douchebag to the sarcastic Netherlands and the whole oh-so-very-awkward double date setting. (And Russia! Seriouly, wtf, cinnamon??? XD).

Canada wasn’t sure what they had talked about while they were away from the table, but once America and Netherlands came back, he could detect something slightly different in the way they interacted with each other, a touch less combative

Russia watched with interest as America struggled out of his jacket and tie, grumbling lightly.
“…shouldn’t’ve let them go back to the hotel. Pervy old creep…”
“Are you going to keep complaining about Mr. Van der Meer all night?” he said.
“Hm? Oh.” He sighed tiredly, tossing the jacket and tie into the laundry basket. “Sorry. I just worry about him I guess. My brother, I mean.”
“Usually you barely ever remember Martin’s name.”
“Matthew.”
“Who?”
America ignored that and continued, getting into a rhythm of pacing as he did, “I shouldn’t. I mean, he’s a real, grownup country, now. He’s got free will and the ability to make informed rational decisions. He’s just happened to choose to have a relationship with a liberal, socialist… Okay, I lost it.”
He flopped over face down onto the bed. Russia started stroking his back. “Why did you have to bring up him and my brother doing it?” America complained into the blankets. “You realize now no matter how much I shower, I’m never going to get that image out of my brain

Hmmm~ Has writer!anon wrote other fills involving Netherlands/Canada? Cause there was a fill ("Maple Express": http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/632.html?thread=1863544#t1863544) that also uses the same last name, van der Meer. ^^
