“I am sorry, Yekaterina. I thought I could find more mushrooms deep in the forest. Instead I met a thief, but don't worry! The blood isn't mine. I had to kill the thief, and I didn't find any mushrooms, but look! His necklace is solid silver. We can sell it tomorrow. Then I will be able to buy good food and nice clothes for you two

Now Ivan finally confessed what had happened the other day to his sisters, so afraid was he that they would be the next to die. Yekaterina and Natalia were frightened, but hid their fear from their brother, who was almost in a panic. That night, the two spoke secretly after Ivan was asleep. If they were to be killed by a curse, there was nothing either of them could do to stop it, but they could still do something to help Ivan. Yekaterina was a skilled seamstress and Natalia had some talent in magic, and together they worked to build something to protect Ivan in the event of their deaths

I'm the one with the knife, and I'm pretty damn awesome too. My first thought went to Gilbert when the thief said that, cause he's the only one who would ever say something like that. 8D
I love how this is going, it definitely fits the pace of a fairy tale. Keep it going!

Ivan felt a bit sad to be leaving the cottage he had lived in for all his life, but he had no choice. He couldn’t very well pack the whole thing up and carry it on his back, bricks and all. At last, he decided to take a warm scarf that had belonged to Yekaterina, and an ornate knife that Natalia had treasured. The scarf he wrapped around his neck and the knife was tucked deep into his satchel for safe keeping. There, now he had no more reason to stay

It was at that point that he did hear something in that strange, quiet forest: growling. He turned and saw a wolf, its teeth bared at Ivan as it drew nearer and nearer. Ivan had never had to defend himself against a wolf before, and reached into his bag for the dagger. It had been good enough to kill a thief, but how good would it be against a wolf

Awww, author!anon, I started reading some Russian fairy tales for a class of mine today and then lo-and-behold, I find this! This is great and, from my limited knowledge, really captures the feel and themes of the stories. I love it so far and I'm going to follow it in the future.
re Captcha: dewolf Paul. The wolf is named Paul...? reCaptcha, what are you trying to tell me?
The princess could be whomever the anonfiller desires! Crack-pairings are welcome!
Just don't forget the magic, the snow(General Winter?!) and a bit of creepy Russia.
