In Which Canada Saves the World That is "One With Russia" anonymous August 23 2009, 16:55:42 UTC
Canada wakes up to find himself in a world that, at first glance, seems far better than his own. All nations are at peace, with no signs of war in sight, practically non-existant crime rates, a flourishing economy, etc.

Imagine his shock/horror/surprise at coming to find the reason for this is that every country has "become one with Russia".

At first, he thinks maybe it's for the better. If everyone is so happy and the world so pure, maybe Russia here is different than the Russia back home?

Then he discovers the other Nations of the world, whose situations are not nearly as bright and splendid as that of their people, merely mistreated servants of Russia, and that it is because of their submission that their countries are so peaceful.

Until he finds a way home, Canada must decide what is better for this world; the unification of being "one" with Russia at the expense of other Nations, or to help the more rebellious Nations get their freedom at the expense of peace ( ... )

I um, doubt I could do a full fic because I'm very very bad at multi-parters (and this needs to be done as a full multi-part fic, seriously), but I couldn't get this idea out of my head.

The room was small and dark with only a large television screen and a couple of laptops for company. There was a makeshift bed in one corner which suggested that someone had been sleeping there recently, but otherwise, it seemed to be empty. He turned to England, giving him a curious, confused look. "What is this?" he asked, not liking the way that England stood in the doorway, silhouetted by the light outside.

"You want to see your brother, don't you?"

"Yes."

England stared at him for a long moment, lips twisted into an unhappy expression. Matthew didn't think he'd seen him look like that in decades. Not since World War Two at least. He sighed heavily, sounding tired and he looked, Matthew realised with a start, old. His eyes seemed to hold the hurt of two thousand years in them ( ... )

Blond hair, glasses and anyone else might have thought... might have thought at it was his brother, that the person standing there was America. Except Matthew ( ... )

"You'll stay with Russia tonight, Alfred," the other Canada said, his smile chilling. He withdrew his thumb from America's mouth and America bowed his head, not saying a word. Canada petted his hair like a dog and bile rose in Matthew's throat when America nuzzled into the petting like it was expected, like he'd done it a thousand times before ( ... )

oh my god, this is going to haunt me. I love the hints at the bigger picture but mostly just, oh, this is several levels of heartbreak and awesome and I feel kinda bad for being all 'yay dystopia!' when I first saw the prompt because you've made this so personal. I honestly don't know who is the most heartbreaking in this, everyone is so tragic.

♥♥, basically. beautifully done.

I'm glad that it worked well since it was really a part that should come in the middle of a story and I was worried it wouldn't make sense. I love dystopian fics too, even if they usually leave me with mixed feelings and worrying about why I like seeing characters messed up XD

Thanks for the kind words ^^

Ahaha! Thankyou! I'm gonna' try to get some more done soon, although there's a chance it might be snippets of events until I can work some coherent plot in there.

Oh, wow. This was just...I'm amazed, writernon. You got the state of things across so well in just three parts, and those brief glances at the big picture made things so impacting. Intense~

And I felt so bad for poor Matthew, having to deal with /himself/ being so corrupted, and doing things like that to America, then giving him over to Russia... His denial of the situation, especially in terms of Alfred, tugged at my heart strings DX

And at the end, with England...I can totally undertsnad where he'd be coming from, and, as much as he's changed, I'm glad to see that at the very least he hasn't lost all sense of compassion or love.

Excellent job, writernon X3 :hands over her soul:

I'm really glad that you liked it. It was a prompt that I couldn't resist even if I've only managed a snippet for now ^^;

One of the things I really find interesting about England is his fatherly/brotherly relationship with America and Canada and in this kind of situation, I can really see him needing to protect Matthew because he couldn't save the other two, even if it meant going against what Matthew wanted.

Thanks again for letting me know that you liked it!

askdf anon.
Wow. D: That was... amazingly well portrayed. It was great how England was so in character, yet changed. I approve greatly.

I dunno if you plan on continuing this, but if you do, I'll be there ready <3

Thanks! I'm glad that you liked it. I always worry with AUs that they're going to be out of character because they've changed so it's nice to know that you think it worked ^^

I wasn't intending to originally, it was just one of those scenes that hit me hard and had to be written, but now there's all kinds of ideas so I might have to work it out as a full story.
