There was this movement before WWII in which Germany was pretty much trying to prove (historically speaking) that many of the other countries in Europe were basically German to justify taking them over later. The funniest part of this? At one point, people were claiming that Shakespeare was actually German, he was just FORCED to write in English because he happened to be born in Stratford-upon-Avon.
