Lithuania officially became a part of Russia in 1795, while Russia was under the rule of Catherine the Great. Lithuania at this point is feeling bitter and doesn't really know Russia that well; he just sees him as a cold hearted, unfeeling monster that doesn't care about anyone. After a year, Catherine the Great dies. Russia seems pretty calm about it, which just supports Liet's feeling that Russia is heartless...until Russia suddenly disappears shortly after the funeral. Lithuania goes after him and finds Russia just about crying his eyes out where he thinks no one can see him. Lithuania is so surprised to see this human side of Russia (and is too kind to just leave him alone to his grief), so he tries to comfort Russia. Russia is mildly horrified that anyone saw him being so weak, but gives in pretty easily to Liet's comfort. And Liet starts to wonder if Russia's as horrible as he thought...
Bonus: Russia was one of Catherine's many lovers and was actually IN love with her, which is part of why he's so heartbroken when she dies.

They moved back to the Winter Palace after the funeral, along with the crowds of mourners (or at least the ones that were members of the nobility.) Russia had been right about a lot of people showing up; the main chamber was almost overflowing. Lithuania felt horribly out of place at the reception; the funeral was easy enough, he just had to stay quiet, but he felt awkward mingling with all these people who were honestly sad about the death of the empress. He stood to the edge of the crowd, trying to not stand out, when he suddenly realized that he hadn't seen Russia in a very long time. Surely he would be at the reception, surely he wouldn't be cruel enough to just skip out

It was then that he heard something. It was so quiet that he almost missed it at first, but there it was again, a soft, gasping sound. It sounded almost like someone was crying. Lithuania crept towards the sound, past another row of empty bookshelves. And then, at last he found Russia. Lithuania's heart almost stopped in shock. Russia, cold hearted Russia, the Russia who was incapable of human emotion, was leaning against the wall near a window, shaking all over with sobs. Even in the dim light Lithuania could see tears streaming down his face, dripping off his chin and nose

Lithuania wasn't sure how long he stood here, rubbing Russia's back while the giant country cried on his shoulder. His shoulder felt damp with tears and he could feel every sob that racked through Russia's chest, but he didn't move away until Russia pulled away at last and started wiping his eyes with an already soggy sleeve

Aww... Poor Russia...
Catherine the Great and him together is practically canon, if you read up on the lady herself. She went to great lengths to make herself Russian and to forget that any bit of her was ever German. At one point she even asked her doctors to bleed out every last drop of German blood in her veins so that she could be truly Russian. The book I've been reading called Sex With the Queen (which is about the love affairs of queens, no duh, and is educational as well as a lot of fun) even said in the last sentence of its (LONG) chapter on Catherine that the greatest love affair of her life was with Russia.
Erm, history-freak-anon will calmly slither away now...

It's by Eleanor Herman and it's AWESOME. It's the sequel to her book Sex With Kings. They're both about various monarchs and their GAZILLIONS of love affairs. Hysterically funny and yet in some parts strangely touching (aw, wook, twu wuv). Oh, geez, I sound like an advertiser...
But, yeah, Catherine the Great was quite a lady. She had her flaws but she still was amazing! Not to be all "gurlz r awsum n boiz sux" but isn't it interesting how both Russia's and England's greatest rulers were both women? Elizabeth I even said that she wouldn't marry because she had married herself to England...

Not to mention Jeanne D'arc, whose only "twu wuv" was France...
Why can't i get the picture of the three(Cathy,Beth and Jeanne) scolding their countries (nowadays)in front of the world?(With Fritz there for Prussia's alluring pleasure....)

If I was more awake, this would have made me start sobbing. I actually put off reading past the first few paragraphs until I knew I wasn't all the way awake.
Anon, this has broken my heart in such a good way. Thank you so, so much for writing this. Honestly.
