Russia/China -- "Why aren't you crazy like me?"

The reason Russia stalks China is that he can't believe that China hasn't been driven mad by his history (stabbed in the back by his brother Japan, abandoned by all his other siblings, taken advantage of by Western nations, etc.) like Russia was with his own history, and wants to know just how China remained sane throughout it all. And perhaps also because he wants to know if he did something wrong; if China can help him regain his sanity.
Run with it, please, anons! I'd like China to show some sympathy or compassion towards Russia at the very least, and Russia to be more than a creepy bastard/rapist towards China.

Russia was a strong country. He endured long, frigid winters, withstood massive invasions, and survived a century of revolutions, changes in power, and severe corruption within his government. He was proud to say that he can handle anything and everything thrown in his direction. His massive size (both physically and geographically) easily gave him an advantage in power, and the latter half of the twentieth century showed just what he was capable of doing (damn that American, by the way). He was the image of a “content” nation, but no matter how much he wore that smile of his, he couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with him

How did he do it? China's history was definitely longer than his own. With dynasties ruling his government for a good majority of his lifetime, the older nation experienced scandals and murders and brutal fights for power behind those golden robes and ornate palaces. His siblings leaving him - Japan's being the most humiliating and Hong Kong's the most depressing - followed by the western nations literally tearing him apart and dividing him and his lands between all of them, accompanied with the fall of the Qing dynasty and the overall end to the Imperial Era... To think that the tiny man could still smile and act like nothing ever happened every time Russia saw him. Russia wanted to know - had to know how he can do it. Why wasn't China crazy like he was

Russia had ever personally been inside China's abode a scant number of times, so he still felt a bit awed whenever he visited. The apartment was large and spacious and was a pleasant mix of both contemporary and traditional themes. The walls were painted a rich deep red color, which made the room feel warmer and more soothing. A plush oriental rug clothed the hardwood floor in the center of the living room, and various decorations hung on the walls, ranging from fans with flowering trees painted on them to paintings of women dressed in traditional Hanfu riding large elegant birds. He even spotted a few objects that were from some of China's siblings; a blanket draped on the couch from Thailand with Buddhist symbols weaved into it, a fragile looking end table from Mongolia with an odd looking stringed instrument from Vietnam leaning against it and a well-trimmed bonsai from Japan on top, and a framed poem with a delicate painting of birds from Korea, just to name what Russia was able to pick out. It was like the apartment was a

Not exactly what I looked for? I'm not going to form a complete opinion as the fic's not finished yet, but so far this looks to be precisely the kind of story I was hoping for! That introspective part at the beginning pretty much nailed down the question that's been nagging at the back of my mind for some time -- why is Russia the only insane nation when so many other nations have suffered through as much, if not more? -- with a thoughtfulness that you don't see often in fics featuring Russia.
I loved your descriptions of how Russia and China are so alike and yet so different at the same time, and the little touches and details you put into the fic that really make it feel fleshed-out (China thinking Russia was Korea, Russia's perusal of the layout of China's home, etc.). And of course, I'm terribly curious about what China's answer will be, although I liked the fact that you took the time to build up to the question. I love you so much for filling this, anon! <3

I love this so far, writer!non. Seriously, you've set the scene just right in the latter bits. I want to sit in China's living room; it sounds absolutely lovely.
And that first bit, where we look into Russia's head - it was perfect.

An uncomfortable silence fell into the room except for the light chinking of dinnerware as China pulled out a couple dishes and fished out some silverware from a drawer. Russia kept his eyes on him as he set the plates on the table and fetched their dinner from the table. Russia wasn't sure if the smaller nation intended to avoid looking at him or not, but it started to really make him antsy. The wok was placed in the middle of the table, which was immediately joined with a large bowl of white rice and some fried fish (so that was he smelled when he first stepped inside). After dinner was set up, China stepped back from the table. “Would you like anything to drink, aru? Some tea, or...?”
“You got vodka?”
A shake of his head. “No, I don't, sorry, aru. Will some baijiu work instead

Something inside of Russia twitched, and he could feel his mood start to shift. A familiar twinkle sparked in the corner of his eye and he pursed his lips. “I changed my mind. I don't need to ask you

And it dawned on him. Back when his Soviet empire was on the rise, Russia had been hunting for nations to follow his new government philosophy, and China's recent downfall made him a prime target. Back then, his vision was fogged with the ambition to create the the perfect force to be reckoned with, so much so that he he used almost any means to expand his empire. China wasn't hard at all; the moment the northern country promised that communism will bring his country back together, he jumped the deal without a second thought. Back then he didn't care, but now that Russia thought about it, he remembered the crazed look in China's eyes, that begging stare that demanded for some way - any way - to fix his shattering country before everything was lost. A wise old nation who always calculated his decisions was reaching into the darkness for salvation, his right mind driven mad by the destruction of what he knew and the failure of trying to fix it all himself

China was very pleased with himself. The moment Russia walked through his door, he knew that the taller nation had something pulling at his tail. China was patient with him, his years playing the role of the understanding Big Brother backing him up, but the direction their conversation went was a bit wayward. But still, the moment those five words flew from his guest's mouth (funny how those same five words nearly made him suffocate on rice and fish), his goal for the evening was to comfort the larger nation, and there was no better way to than to tell the truth

LSJKAHD THIS. THIS IS SO CUTEEE~!!
It's so tender and sweet and fluffy and I love that omake and the reference to Alice (*loves the tale, like, unconditionally*) andand--*breathes*
And I wholeheartedly agree with you; there should me more RuChi fluff in the meme(/world). :)
I also have a soft spot for sane!Russia, and that's unfortunately pretty hard to find, so thank you really, really much for writing this. x3 It gave me this warm, fuzzy feeling inside, and totally made my day. :3 <3
Yes, there really needs to be more Russia/China fluff here, and this fill hit the sweet spot to satisfy my recent craving for it.
Russia is indeed a difficult character to write for because he's just got all those layers and alternate interpretations to his character, but I think you managed to make him plausibly semi-sane here -- prone to fits of depression and anger (I never really thought about his 'insane' moments as being mainly due to mood swings, but that's an interesting way to put it), but sane enough to know his own faults and limits. And China is so understanding of Russia here, knowing what he needs to hear to calm down. I don't even mind that they're pretty much just friends here, because their dynamic was just wonderful to read with them actually getting along and not making me cringe for either of them for once

You're welcome! I actually have a similar ailment while writing something; the beginning comes easily to me but later parts take more time for me to work on and I tend to run out of steam in the middle. Which is why I'm horrible at completing fills. >_>
Ah ha, you did a good job of winging it, then. I kind of had an answer in mind for that question, but it was just my personal theory and I wanted to see someone else's take on it.
I'm not a fan of sudden undying proclamations of love either (and WORD to gradual relationship building being the best kind), so as much as I would have liked something a bit more slashy, I greatly prefer Russia and China being BFFs than Russia and China being Strangled By The Red String, so to speak.
Run with it, please, anons! I'd like China to show some sympathy or compassion towards Russia at the very least, and Russia to be more than a creepy bastard/rapist towards China.
