Canada first noticed something was wrong when Russia averted her eyes and avoided his touch in formal arrangements. America seemed happier than Canada had seen him in a long while. He wouldn’t keep his hands off of Russia, and whispering things in her ear to make her giggle, and casting quick glances to her that lasted more than Canada could bear.
Jealousy stared him in the eye and smirked. Canada stared back, and willed his eyes not to tear.
---
A few months later, Russia’s belly was bigger and rounder. Her breasts barely fit her dancing costume, and her eyes shone. Pregnancy looked good on Russia. It was how she displayed her belly with pride; how she smiled for no real reason every few seconds; how she spoke quietly in Russian with her unborn child, smothering the material of her dress over it.
Canada wanted to ask. He had to, before he went insane from thinking too hard. But one day, when Russia took his hand with and adoringly smile and placed it on her round middle, he understood there was no need to ask.
For years Russia avoided him. Or maybe he just hadn’t tried hard enough to get in touch with her. He wasn’t sure.
He heard the news she needed money, and was willing to give Alaska over to his father for almost nothing, because it was better than handing him over to the United Kingdom. To himJealousy was easily replaced by resentment; maybe not replaced, as it seemed to have been there all along

What an awesome bittersweet fill. Poor Canada, he can't ever win, specially against his brother, can he? And poor Russia. I believe both were treated badly by other characters, in a way. At least they'll be together nowadays in my mind ^^U

Apparently, Republics didn’t marry Empires either.
