Spain x Austria! after all they were kind of married for centuries.
This is going to be a little long.
He is that fallen lance that lies as hurled, That lies unlifted now, come dew, come rust, But still lies pointed as it ploughed the dust. If we who sight along it round the world, See nothing worthy to have been its mark, It is because like men we look too near, Forgetting that as fitted to the sphere, Our missiles always make too short an arc. They fall, they rip the grass, they intersect The curve of earth, and striking, break their own; They make us cringe for metal-point on stone. But this we know, the obstacle that checked And tripped the body, shot the spirit on Further than target ever showed or shone.

Dudes, the House of Hapsburg in Spain dies off in 1700. Are you planning to get somewhere before, or...
No, ok, I seriously love this. They're so them, and the dynamic is realistic and really sweet, and somewhat historically sound, too - people at the time still had to cope with arranged marriages, isn't it?

This fic is set in the late 1400s and early 1500s, when Philip the Handsome married Joanna of Castile (thereby extending the Habsburg dynasty to Spain). However, considering the ageing of the nation-characters, there are a few decades that may have passed within the fic itself.
Personally, considering the era, my opinion is that with arranged marriages, it isn't really much of a big deal hence Austria's calm acceptance, but Spain is just romantic and ridiculous hence the conflict in their relationship.
I've been really hesitant about my writing, so I'm happy that you think so well of this fic :D I am not kidding when I say this will be long, but I'll be talking more about that in the post-chapter notes (which will hopefully not be too far away). There'll be about 3 chapters in all.

Oh, don't worry, I like the pacing so far, I was kidding. They're both still rather young, isn't it? Late teens, I guess.
And the dynamic you mentioned, with Austria's quiet acceptance (noblesse oblige and all that jazz) vs. Spain but-I'm-the-country-of-passion! naivete is what makes the fic for me - it's really modern, easy to identify with, but it's still working really well with the historical setting.
Shut up, inner SpaMano shipper! Romano is off somewhere with Greece or something like that!

I'm sure you already know this but since you've mentioned tomatoes several times it'll have to be set after they started colonizing South America because they didn't have tomatoes until after they discovered them in the New World and brought them back with them when they returned. (Potatoes as well). So mid 1500's to early 1600's. So if you want to set it earlier then that you'll have to adjust what they're eating if/when you de-anon it.
Otherwise I'm really adoring this fic a different very rare, but historical accurate pairing with great writing and characterizations! Really loving it.
Oh snap, thanks bunches drivebynon. You... give me too much credit. D: I totally didn't know that being an Asian!British colony!anon.
Even though I don't really plan on mentioning specific time periods, it's good for me to keep in mind. In any case, they married (about 1496/1497) about a month or so before the beginning of the fic, so the period could totally be adjusted to the early to mid-1500s by the time Come Dew, Come Rust actually begins. The second chapter involves Spain's run in with England (late 1500s to early 1600s). The third chapter would be late 1600s to early 1700s.
Please feel free to drop in trivia that I may or may not know. All historical rectifications are totally welcome!
Thanks so much for your comment anon ♥ I... will admit that I need the boost. I am not very confident with my writing at ALL so it makes me happy to see other people enjoying it. XD

For a single moment, Austria looked at Spain incomprehensibly, in a mixture of bewilderment and vexation at that dejected face. His scowl was inescapably polite, but present nonetheless. It felt like he had just experienced the culmination of every single moment he’d made himself tolerate Spain’s bullheadedness and it caused his patience to fray dangerously thin. Austria let out a heavy sigh, despondent and irritated, and pinched the bridge of his nose to stave off an impending migraine. He spoke with as controlled a tone as he could manage, but there was no denying the exasperation in his voice.
“There’s been some major miscommunication going on here. I fully acknowledge you, your people, and the fact that we’re married. You do mean something to me. If you didn’t, I wouldn’t go so far as to help you get settled into my customs so my people would like you, or ship in tomatoes from Spain so that you can have soup made with it

Spain threw his head back with a cry as he came, legs tightening around Austria’s waist and fingers of his right hand digging into Austria’s arm. He trembled and felt his entire body collapse into the mattress, panting heavily as his head lolled to the side and his vision slid in and out of focus. Above, Austria released his grip of Spain’s cock, other palm pressed flat against his thigh and sliding down with sweat. He leaned over Spain, eyes half-closed, lips parted to breathe. His orgasm had come a little before, and he had begun to recover a little

They’d argued as Austria marched them across the manse to his own room. He threw Spain in and locked the door behind them, striding towards Spain to catch his face in his hands and shut him up with a well-placed kiss. Spain struggled under his grip, definitely superior when it came to brute strength, but Austria was overpowering. He had gained a might that had been absent when they were younger and it reminded Spain of exactly why it was he who had been married into the House of Habsburg. Spain broke away with a harsh shove, wiping the trail of saliva from his mouth with the back of his hand as he arched his back defensively, glaring at Austria like a livid cat. He was panting, a rage sparking within him and burning his blood

Spain gripped the sheets with both hands, arching over Austria, twitching with each sensation as he was pleasured from the front and back, panting openly and pinning Austria with a burning, half-lidded gaze as he revelled in the utter chaos that had overtaken his consort’s appearance. The sight of him dirty and red-faced and hungry was a turn-on Spain had been trying to keep at bay, but he couldn’t give a damn even if Austria begged him to

Austria decided that he had never been so embarrassed in his life and was impossibly grateful for the cover Spain’s chest provided as he buried his face in it, face aflame, clutching at Spain even while he did his best to ignore the warm laughter that rang out in the room for the first time ever. He felt Spain squeeze him tight, lips by his temple

Hey guys, authornon here. Some notes to be perused. First of all, this is the first of three chapters I'll posting that will be detailing the entirety of their marriage. There are a lot of errors here and there which I will try my best to correct when I post a proper version. I'm not a historian by any means, but I have tried to stay as accurate to the history that I know as closely as possible (which I will admit I know little of as I learned close to nothing about Spain and Austria in history beyond the search for the New World
